As part of the 125th anniversary celebrations of the Irish Guards, a ceremonial march took place in East Belfast on 6 September 2025. The regiment, founded in 1900 by Queen Victoria to honour Irish soldiers who served in the Boer War, marked this milestone with a formal procession from Campbell College to St Mark’s Church.
Led by the Band, Drums, and Pipes of the Irish Guards, the parade culminated in the laying up of the old battle Colours—a solemn tradition symbolizing the retirement of regimental flags that have seen active service. This act of reverence was held within the sacred setting of St Mark’s Church, underscoring the regiment’s enduring ties to faith, heritage, and community.
The Ballyclare Branch of the Royal British Legion was proudly represented by Branch Standard Bearer Gavin Eastwood, who carried the Branch Standard along the parade route. Gavin joined fellow Standard Bearers from across Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland in lining the route, adding a powerful visual tribute to the occasion and reflecting the unity and respect shared among Legion branches.
This event followed earlier parades in Carrickfergus and Bangor, forming part of a wider commemorative tour that celebrated the Irish Guards’ legacy and their continued service. The regiment’s presence was met with admiration and pride, reaffirming their deep historical and cultural connection to the region
Thank you to Gavin for representing our Branch at this event.
Lest we forget.
