Members of RBL Ballyclare Branch gathered in Ballyclare for the Branch's own Battle of the Somme Act of Remembrance. This simple but heartfelt occasion brought the local community together in a meaningful and respectful act of remembrance.
Members of the local clergy led those assembled in prayer, offering thoughtful reflections that provided an opportunity to pause and remember the sacrifices made by so many.
Wreaths were then laid by representatives from across the community, each tribute offered with sincerity and respect. It was particularly moving to see veterans, families, young people and long-standing supporters all taking part, demonstrating the enduring importance of remembrance across generations.
The Branch was honoured to be joined by Prof Mark Taylor KStJ DL, representing the Lord-Lieutenant of County Antrim; Councillor Vera McWilliam, representing the Mayor of Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council; Robin Swann MP; other local elected representatives; and Janet Ochiltree, Northern Ireland Women's Section District Chair. Their presence was greatly appreciated and added further significance to the occasion.
Following the service, members and guests returned to the Sportsman's Bar, where the day continued in a warm and welcoming atmosphere. A BBQ was enjoyed by all, while stories, laughter and conversation were shared among friends old and new. Entertainment from Sam Stewart provided a fitting conclusion to the day, helping to strengthen the sense of comradeship and community spirit that characterises the Branch.
The day was a powerful reminder that remembrance is not only about honouring the past but also about bringing people together in the present. Ballyclare Branch extends its sincere thanks to everyone who attended and supported the event.
We will remember them.
