Shipston On Stour

Welcome to the Shipston on Stour Branch of The Royal British Legion

UPDATED 8th November 2023

Welcome to the Branch website, we've been up to plenty of things this year.

We're just about to launch into Remembrance weekend and will be marking the 11.00 two minute silence on Saturday 11th November in the High Street, outside The George.

The following day is Remembrance Sunday and there will be the usual Parade and Service. Meet in the High Street from 10.00 for a 10.45 move off to Church. We will again be reading the names of the Fallen and observing the two minute silence at the War Memorial, before entering Church for the Service. The Church Service will also be streamed on the usual St Edmund's feed.

Looking back over the year.....

16th May saw the official date of the 50th anniversary of the last National Servicemen being demobbed. A call for stories from ex-National Servicemen resulted in three responses.

On the 20th May we invited our fantastic Poppy Appeal Collectors to a party at the Scout Hut. In total just over 40 people enjoyed drinks and nibbles on a lovely sunny evening. Hopefully we'll do it again and those who couldn't make it will be available.

We marked Armed Forces Day with an excellent Breakfast in the White Bear on Saturday 24th June.  We also marked the– 70th Anniversary of the end of the Korean War on 27th July 2023 with social media posts.

In the weeks immediate before the start of the 2023 Poppy Appeal we delivered the last of the booklets detailing the story of the man/men who the streets and closes etc are named after in the new developments are named after.  We did this at the same time in 2022, but quite a few houses were either unoccupied or not built.

We have also just launched the 3rd Edition of Shipston Remembers with details from the 1911 and 1921 census and 1939 Register added. This provides the biographies of all 48 of the Shipston Fallen.
