On Friday 22nd December 1944 a United States Army Air Forces De Havilland DH 98 Mosquito Mk XVI crashed near Breakheart Quarry.  The aircraft was part of 654 Squadron, 25th Bombardment Group. The role of the Squadron was specialist including photographic work and liaison with agents of the US Office of Strategic Services (similar to the SOE and forerunner to the CIA). Research points to the fact that this aircraft was assessing specialist equipment, the H2S radar, which seemed to be causing the Mosquito platform problems related to its electrical requirements. The aircraft was lost in thick fog.  The crew, sadly, lost their lives. They were Flight Officer James (Jim) Dreyfus Spear (pilot - second left below)) of Cleveland, Ohio and Carroll B Bryan of Kodak ,Tennessee. It is the intention to raise a memorial in Dursley in due course to these two men who gave their lives for our freedom.
