BRANCH NEWS ARTICLES 2026
July 1st July 2026 - The Battle of the Somme - 110 Anniversary
The Battle of the Somme - also known as the Somme Offensive, was a battle of the First World War, fought by the Armies of the British Empire and the French Republic against the German Empire. It took place between the 1st July - 18th November 1916, on both sides of the upper reaches of the river Somme in France. The battle was intended to hasten victory for the Allies. More than 3 Million men fought in the battle, of whom more than 1 million were either wounded or killed making it one of the deadliest battles in human history.

27, 28, 29 May - Remembrance Letters & Poems from the Great War, for more information please contact Nick Smith from the Orihuela theatre group. The tragic accounts combined with the touching and heartbreaking poems form a powerful reflection on sacrifice, memory, and the importance of remembering those who lived, fought, and died during this world changing conflict.
As voices from the past are brought to life on stage, Remembrance reveals the human cost of conflict: the excitement of enlistment, the reality of life at the front, the pain of separation, and the longing for peace. Together, these personal accounts form a powerful reflection on sacrifice, memory, and the importance of remembering those who lived, fought, and died during the First World War.
The performance stands not only as a memorial, but as a reminder — that behind every name is a story, and behind every war are lives forever changed.
BOOKING OPENS IN EARLY MAY
Presented in Orihuela theatre and told entirely in English combined with numerous images and footage from the period, this moving production continues Networks Theatre’s tradition of bringing live drama of quality to the Costa Blanca region.
With a running time of approximately 55 minutes, Remembrance promises to be a memorable and emotional theatrical experience.

Following its recent integration with the Royal British Legion, the National Memorial Arboretum is entering a new chapter in its history. From September 2026, it will become known as the Royal British Legion National Remembrance Gardens, marking a significant moment in the evolution of the nation’s year‑round place to remember.
Over the past 25 years, the 150‑acre estate has grown from the seed of an idea into an inspirational living landscape of Remembrance. Welcoming more than 300,000 visitors each year, it has become a place where people can reflect, learn and remember the service and sacrifice of the Armed Forces, emergency services and civilian organisations.
The Royal British Legion became the Arboretum’s parent charity in 2003, with full integration completed in April 2026. The new name reflects the RBL’s long‑term commitment to the site and its ambition, set out in its strategy to 2035, to evolve Remembrance and widen participation.
The Royal British Legion National Remembrance Gardens will continue to invite people not only to reflect, but to take an active part in Remembrance, helping to bring society together to recognise, remember and support the Armed Forces community.

Millions of words have been written, and the details debated, regarding the conflict: the history behind the invasion of Iraq; the efforts to stabilise the country; and the war’s legacy. What is not in dispute is the professionalism and dedication of the British Armed Forces during Operation TELIC.
Men and women of our Armed Forces joined the US-led Coalition in the invasion of Iraq in March 2003. Within a month, and under extreme conditions, our forces achieved their immediate objectives while facing repeated and deadly opposition. UK forces were primarily responsible for securing provinces in southern Iraq, including the city of Basra.
Coalition forces then began stabilisation operations, but violence escalated across Iraq, as a growing insurgency turned into a sectarian civil war that would claim tens of thousands of lives. Military and civilian Coalition personnel and the Iraqis working with them were targeted. For six years they faced deadly hazards including roadside bombs, snipers and mortar and rocket attacks while on patrol and in barracks.
Amid this, British forces and partners were engaged in providing humanitarian aid, helping local communities and in the painstaking rebuilding and reconstruction of both civil society and the Iraqi military services, in often austere conditions.
By the end of 2008 the situation had stabilised, and British combat operations ended in 2009. Most personnel left Iraq, leaving behind a number who continued the training of the Iraqi military. The last British personnel departed on 22nd May 2011: Op TELIC was at an end.
The duty in Iraq came at a high cost. Tragically, 179 British Armed Forces personnel lost their lives in Op TELIC. Thousands more were wounded, many with life-changing physical injuries. Others experienced emotional or mental ill-health as a result of their service in Iraq.
We remember how much we ask of our Armed Forces; and we acknowledge their dedication to service.

Expo Torrevieja is one of the most popular lifestyle events on the southern Costa Blanca, taking place on Saturday 11 and Sunday 12 April at the Torrevieja International Auditorium.
Now firmly established as a highlight on the local calendar, this two-day exhibition promises to be a lively showcase of everything that makes the area such a vibrant place to live, work, and visit. With free admission and parking, organizers expect around 10,000 visitors over the weekend.
More than 180 exhibitors will be participating, offering a wide mix of products, services, and ideas. Visitors can browse the stands of real estate specialists, legal and financial advisors, health and wellness providers, mobility experts, home renovation companies, technology providers, artisans, and lifestyle businesses. So, whether you're looking for practical information, new inspiration, or simply a pleasant day out, there will be plenty to see.
One of the most popular attractions at the exhibition is the Clubs and Associations Zone, which is expected to be bigger than ever this year. This area highlights the rich community life of Torrevieja, Orihuela Costa, and the entire Vega Baja region, giving visitors the opportunity to learn more about local social groups, sports clubs, fan organizations, and volunteer opportunities. For many, especially newcomers, it's an ideal way to make new connections and discover what the area has to offer.
Charitable and community organizations will also be strongly represented, continuing the event's long tradition of supporting good causes and recognizing the valuable work carried out throughout the Costa Blanca.
Entertainment will liven up the atmosphere throughout the weekend, particularly on Saturday, when local artists, choirs, and community groups will help bring the event to life. Music, cultural exhibits, and live performances will also reflect the diverse and international character of the area.
The exhibition will kick off for exhibitors with a welcome meet and greet on Friday evening in the main auditorium, featuring the Mayor of Torrevieja, Eduardo Dolón, as the keynote speaker . Throughout the weekend, talks and live demonstrations will keep visitors engaged, while raffles and surprise prizes will add an extra touch of excitement, including the chance for one lucky couple to win a Mediterranean cruise.
Weather permitting, the ever-popular classic car, motorcycle and scooter exhibition will return on Sunday morning , adding even more interest to the event grounds.
With its doors open from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm on both days, Expo Torrevieja is once again preparing to offer a memorable weekend full of ideas, entertainment and community spirit.
