Overview of the Royal British Legion

The Royal British Legion is the UK's leading Armed Forces charity and one of its largest membership organisations. Members get together through the network of branches and clubs all over the country and overseas to participate in social, fundraising and welfare activities. Please visit the main RBL site for more in depth information.

Current Münster Branch situation

At present we have a membership of 51 roughly 70% that live in Germany 30% living abroad. There is a very dedicated committee and some good supporting members. Our aim is to increase membership numbers and create a community hub for ex and current members of the armed forces and forces associated people. It is also the Chairman's main focus to connect as many ex members of the armed forces that have settled in the city of Münster. This will give the opportunity to socialise with each other, whilst at the same time promoting our Branch of the Royal British Legion.

Branch Awards 2025

The outgoing Chairman of the RBL Münster Branch, Roy Johnson, awarded the following 3 members a special certificate of appreciation for their dedicated and long-standing commitment to the Branch:

Elke Taylor, Shaun Taylor

Kim Fitzpatrick

Shaun and Elke both joined The RBl in Detmold in 1988 then moved to Münster in 2002 where they joined the Branch.

Shaun became the Branch Treasurer shortly after joining and streamlining the accounting system in line with RBL policy.

After 18 months in the position his wife Elke took over the role of Branch Treasurer. This was due to deployments on operations and exercises, by Shaun.

Shaun has held most positions in the Branch during his years as a member also standing in as Standard Bearer as and when required.

Elke has also held the position of Branch Secretary where she supported Peter Robson the Branch Chairman

Shaun’s main highlights were obtaining a Standard for the Branch, celebrating its 25th and 40th Anniversary and being involved in hosting the District of Germany Conference in Münster.

For Elke she was the first and youngest German associate member to hold an officer’s position in the Branch as the treasurer.

Kim Fitzpatrick:

Kim joined the RBL Münster Branch in 1993. She grew up with the Legion as both her parents were long standing members.

Her Father held the position of National Chairman and her Mother President of the Berkshire Women’s section.

She was fully aware of the commitment that was required and very knowledgeable when she joined thanks to her parent’s experience and travelling with them to many functions.

Kim over the years has held every position in the RBL. From 1995 to 1996. She was Branch Poppy Appeal Organiser. 1997 to 2003 District of Germany Conference Committee Secretary, 1999 to 2000 Branch Vice chairman, 2000-2001 Branch Secretary, 2002-2006 District of Germany Training Officer, in 2003 -2017 was the Conference Committee Chairman and has been a caseworker since 2004`to date. 2001-2008 Branch Chairman. 2008-2009 Branch Secretary, 2009-2012 Branch chairman, 2012-2014 Branch Secretary

2017-2018 Branch Secretary, 2019-2021 District Vice Chairman, 2021-2022 District Chairman.

Served as an Independent Examiner and served on the District Finance and General-Purpose committee.

Has multi-tasked on many occasions and has received a Branch, District and Centenary award.

Shaun, Elke & Kim have over the years kept the RBL Münster Branch alive and for their efforts the Branch has kept going.

They are keen to point out their achievements were part of a team effort.

They richly deserve this Branch Award and are an example of what the Legion stands for.

RBL Cycling Branch 4th May 2025

The Münster Secretary Phil Smith and Events Member Danny Wild did an excellent job at organising the stop over for the Münster leg of the Royal British Legion Cycling Branch ride to Berlin. The Secretary and the Chairman Mark Hulican met the team as they rode into Lützow barracks at 1800 on Sunday evening and got them settled into their accommodation. The Secretary then hosted them till they left on Monday morning. They visited the war cemetery at Handorf. Before they left they presented a certificate signed by them all to the Münster Branch.
