History of Mollina Branch

2005 - After a bumpy start we formed up on the 22 February 2005. The members we had at the time were 15 (the minimum) and before the first official meeting we were up to 23.

2006 - The founder committee members resigned in October 2006 and under the new committee, the membership increased to over 80. This has now fallen back to approximately 75 due to us losing a few who did not wish to renew for the current year, 2007-8 but we will recover as we have several new applications in the pipeline. Sadly almost all the original members have left us but the branch is now more active than ever.

2007 - We have a full committee for the first time and more than doubled the previous Poppy Appeal in 2006-7, raising over €3600. Last year's Chairman stood down at the AGM; he did say at the time of his election that he would stand for one year only and has now been appointed District Secretary for Spain South. Larry Teague is now Chaiman and we are embarking on a programme of active recruiting. Our Welfare work continues under the Chairmanship of Lin Salvage.

2009-11

In October 2010 Mick Munt decided to stand down after many years meritorious service to the Branch. The most obvious successor to succeed Mick was Larry Teague the current Chair who had led the Branch through some very difficult times whilst the British Legion in Spain was in turmoil.

But who would be Chair? For the first time in the history of the Branch a non ex service member Dave Punshon was elected who in his opening address stated that he had been a Legion supporter from childhood as both parents were past Standard Bearers. Dave also expressed the hope that he would only serve until an ex service person could be found to take his place.

2012-16

Former Royal Marine Marty Power took over as chairman. During his tenure, a number of Legion initiatives were introduced - Branch Community Support, LOMAS, along with training for new and existing members. The branch also moved from Saydo to a fantastic venue - Parque La Vina.

2016-18

When Marty left Spain to return to the UK, the Treasurer of 8 years - Steve Taylor was elected as Chairman. During this time, a really good committee helped grow the branch by an excellent social programme and interesting speakers at Branch meetings.

2018-19

At the AGM in 2018, Austin Tansley became Chairman as Steve left Spain for the UK.

Of our 120+ membership the majority are based around Mollina and Alameda with the rest scattered over a geographical area of 300 square kilometres .

Engaging with such a widespread membership is a challenge and the branch committee and social committee is continually seeking new ideas and people so if you can help contact any of the members listed.
