A Memorable Poppy Seminar
Earlier this year, our local Poppy Appeal Organiser, Laura Lovell, attended the Royal British Legion’s Summer Seminar – an opportunity to connect with fellow organisers and hear what’s in store for the 2025 campaign.
One of the most powerful moments of the day came from guest speaker Matt Fisher, a former soldier who lost his leg after being shot while on patrol in Afghanistan in 2009.
Matt’s story wasn’t just moving it was a reminder of exactly why the Poppy Appeal matters.
After returning home, doctors tried to save Matt’s foot, but complications left him facing the life-altering decision to have it amputated. That decision marked the beginning of a long and difficult journey, not just of recovery, but of rediscovering purpose, rebuilding confidence, and finding a new path in life.
Thanks to support from charities like the Royal British Legion, Matt was able to get back on his feet, literally and figuratively.
Laura reflected: “Matt’s honesty, courage and determination were nothing short of inspirational. Hearing how the RBL supported him through the darkest moments was a powerful reminder of why we do what we do. Every pound we raise helps someone take their next step forward.”
As we prepare for this year’s Poppy Appeal (16 October – 11 November), we’re looking for local volunteers to help with collecting donations. Whether you can give a couple of hours or a few days, every bit of time helps us support those who’ve served and sacrificed.
If you’d like to be part of the team, please contact:
