Leatherhead

The Leatherhead Branch was first established in 1921 shortly after the founding of the Legion. Branch co-founder George Dench carried the Parish Church Cross at the dedication of Leatherhead War Memorial in North Street, which was built to honour ‘The Sons of Leatherhead’ who had given their lives in the service of Crown and Country in the 1914-18 War.

Following the end of WW2 in 1945, the Leatherhead Branch led memorial services in the town. In the 1990s the branch worked with the Friends of Leatherhead Parish Church to collect names of The Fallen and to establish a Chapel of Remembrance in the Parish Church. This led to the creation of Branch's historic vellum Roll of Honour on which are inscribed the names of 117 Leatherhead parishioners who fell in the two World Wars. This Book of Remembrance is kept in a display case in the Church of St Mary & St Nicholas, Church Road, Leatherhead, and may be viewed by visitors to the church.

Recently re-formed, the Leatherhead Branch is an active part of the Royal British Legion in Surrey and is developing a year-round programme of activities including involvement in the Poppy Appeal and organising a range of memorial events, talks, visits and social activities, and providing support and fellowship for veterans, their families, and the wider Armed Forces community in Leatherhead and surrounding areas, including the nearby towns and villages of Ashtead, Bookham, Claygate, Cobham, Effingham, Esher, Fetcham, Oxshott, and Stoke D’Abernon.
