Hong Kong

Welcome to the RBL (Hong Kong & China Branch)

The RBL in Hong Kong and China is here to support locally enlisted personnel, veterans of the Royal Navy, the Army and the Royal Air Force, and veterans from all nations and their families who are in Hong Kong and China. We stand beside them with support that is practical, emotional and financial, and that protects their dignity, independence and wellbeing for as long as it is needed.

We were registered in Hong Kong in April 1921, a month before the Legion was founded in London. We have been here ever since, we work with the SAR Hong Kong Government, and we are not going anywhere.

That includes the Gurkhas and the Volunteers, and veterans of Commonwealth and NATO forces who have made this city their home. Their families are members of this community in their own right. Most of the veterans we support are over eighty.

Our work rests on four pillars

  • Welfare. Practical help when it is needed most: grants, care in the community, nursing support, transport, hearing and vision care,
  • Comradeship. The lunches, happy hours, dinners, sport, tours, talks, education and help with wills and funerals that together keep this community together.
  • Commemoration. Preserving the record of service in Hong Kong: the locally enlisted, the Gurkhas, the Volunteers and all who defended this city.
  • Ceremony. Remembrance Sunday at the Cenotaph, and the services through the year.

Hong Kong's veteran family

The Branch looks after, and works alongside, the organisations that make up Hong Kong's veteran community:

  • Hong Kong Ex-Servicemen's Association (HKESA). Formed in 1997 from four associations of locally enlisted personnel, with its clubhouse in Cheung Sha Wan.
  • Hoi Luen Society. Royal Navy veterans in Hong Kong; it was established in the 1960s and includes RN, RM, RFA and the shore parties that enabled the Dragon Station in Hong Kong .
  • World War II Veterans' Association. Its clubhouse in Causeway Bay houses the veterans' mess, Branch office and our Second World War archive.
  • Royal Hong Kong Regiment (The Volunteers) Association. Veterans of the Regiment, disbanded in 1995, with their clubhouse in Happy Valley.
  • British Gurkha Ex-Servicemen's Association (Hong Kong). Veterans of all the Gurkha Regiments and units, with their clubhouse in Jordan

We also work closely with the Hong Kong Locally Enlisted Personnel Trust and the Gurkha Welfare Trust.

A veteran who belongs to one, belongs to all…

Visitors and guests are welcome

Veterans, members, families, visiting ships' companies, delegations and members of the public are all welcome. Veterans passing through Hong Kong can come to us for advice and, if needed, emergency help. Our happy hours are open to all veterans, members and their families, and visitors to the office are welcome by appointment. Details are on the Branch Information page and at www.rbl.hk.
