MEMORIAL TOURS AND ROUTES

TOUR 1 – A Walking Route. Starting at The Sands.

Firstly, head round the back of DFS and find the footpath that leads to the School Area and visit Trinity School in Strand Road (Memorial 20).  Retrace your steps to The Sands and cross the Eden Bridge; on the right, find the steps leading into the Gardens on the north side. Memorial 12 is on the wall as you descend the steps. Follow footpath along the River bank to Memorial 1 (The County Memorial). Follow the path south to cross the Memorial Bridge. Follow the footpath out of the park to St Aidan’s Road. At the junction with Warwick Road turn left away from the City Centre and follow the road to the Botcherby Community Centre (Memorial 4) at the junction with Victoria Road. Retrace your steps back towards the City Centre to St Aidan’s Church (Memorial 32). Follow Warwick Road to Our Lady and St Joseph’s Church (Memorial 36). Continue on Warwick Road to the former St George’s Church, now Warwick Tower Antiques and the location of Memorial 34. Turn right at Crosby Street to St Paul’s Church (Memorial 39). Head into the City Centre and at Lowther Street turn right to Chapel Street and find the Border Kirk (Church of Scotland) and Memorial 71. Retrace your steps to Lowther Street, cross the road and walk through The Lanes Shopping Centre to Greenmarket and Memorial 2 (The City Memorial). Follow Scotch Street out of the City back to the Sands.

TOUR 2 – A Walking Route with time included to visit 2 major locations.

Park at any City Centre Car park and head to Carlisle Cathedral (Memorial 31). In the Border Regiment Chapel view the various memorials and the Book of Remembrance. Leave the Cathedral grounds back into the City Centre and on your right is St Cuthbert’s Lane leading to St Cuthbert’s Church (Memorial 33). Leave St Cuthbert’s Church grounds turning right towards The Sportsman Pub and Right again to West Walls. Follow West Walls to the right until Carlisle Castle comes into view. Cross the main road at the footbridge or at Tullie House underpass and enter Carlisle Castle to visit the Memorial 6 at ALMA Block – the collection within the Cumbria Museum of Military Life (There is an entrance fee to the Museum). When finished, make your way back to your vehicle.

TOUR 3 – Requires a car or other transport!

Starting at Kingstown, visit St Peter’s Church (Memorial 7). Head towards Carlisle; just before the Gosling Bridge Public House are the gates to Stanwix Cemetery (Memorial 10). Head further towards the City to Stanwix and St Michael’s Church (Memorial 38). Head into the City, past Carlisle Castle and follow signs towards Dalston and Carlisle Crematorium. At Nelson Street, turn left and then right at St James Road and St James Church (Memorial 35). Carry on St James Road and at the junction, go ahead and then right onto Percy Road to Dalston Road. Turn left at Richardson Street to enter Carlisle Cemetery to find Memorials 8 and 9. Leaving the cemetery, go left on the Dalston Road and immediately after the Pirelli Factory, turn left into Cummersdale to another St James Church (Memorial 44). Return to Dalston Road and turn left. Take the right hand turn at Peters Road; at the roundabout on the Wigton Road turn right towards the City to St Bede’s Church and Memorial 68.

 

TOUR 4 –Requires a Car or other transport! 

Start at Houghton Village towards the M6 flyover; beforehand, take a right to St John’s Church (Memorial 52). Head back and cross M6 to the A689. Turn right and left towards Scaleby Village Hall (Memorial 17). Continue to the A6071 and turn right towards Brampton. Take the left to Walton (Memorial 63) Continue on the A6071 and then the B6318 into Gilsland and St Mary Magdalene Church (Memorial 69). Follow the road out of Gilsland to the A69 and head towards Carlisle. Take the right turn at Low Row to find the Church at Nether Denton (Memorial 22). Continue on this road to Lanercost Priory (Memorial 56). Continue on the road towards Brampton to visit St Martin’s Church (Memorial 28) and Brampton War memorial Hospital (Memorial 18). Take Carlisle Road out of Brampton to the A689. Turn Right and at Carlisle Airport turn right to Irthington (Memorial 53). Come back towards the airport and take the right fork to the A689. Turn right and at Crosby on Eden, turn left to visit Memorial 42. 

TOUR 5 – Requires a Car or other transport!

Start at Wreay signposted off the A6 South of Junction 42 at St Mary’s Church (Memorial 67). Head back to the A6; turn right towards Penrith and left to Cotehill (Memorial 41). Follow road towards Cumwhinton(Memorial 14) and Wetheral (Memorial 66) at Holy Trinity Church. Leaving Wetheral, head towards Warwick Bridge (A69). Turn right over the Bridge and immediately right again down the other side of the river bank to Great Corby (Memorial 15).  Continue to Cumwhitton (Memorial 45) and on again to the T Junction and turn left to Castle Carrock (Memorial 40). Continue on the B6413 to Talkin Village (Memorial 62) and then to Farlam (Memorial 48). Continue towards the A689 and left on the A69 avoiding Brampton to Hayton Village (Memorial 50). Go back to the A69 to Warwick Bridge to visit Memorial 64 at Holme Eden (St Pauls) and Memorial 65 at St Leonard's Church, (Warwick on Eden). Finally, follow the A69 towards Carlisle turning left into Scotby and Memorials 59 and 60.

TOUR 6 – (About 45 Miles) Requires a Car or other transport!. A map and a sense of direction are ESSENTIAL! 

Start at Rockcliffe Church (Memorial 58) and the Rockcliffe Village Hall (Memorial 72). Head out of Rockcliffe take the left hand fork and after about 2 miles after Aero Nurseries turn left over the M6 to the A7 at Harker. Turn left to Blackford Church (Memorial 27). Go back to the A7 heading towards Longtown.  After Westlintion, turn right at Cliff Road to the A6071. Turn right and after about 1 mile turn left to Kirklinton (Memorial 55). Continue to Hethersgill (Memorial 51 at St Mary’s Churchyard. Follow signs to Roweltown and then to Stapleton (Memorial 61). Pick up the B6318 towards Roadhead and follow signs to Bewcastle and St Cuthbert’s Church (Memorial 25); retrace your steps but take the right hand fork to the B6318. Turn right but carry straight on a few yards later and head to the Bewcastle URC Church (Memorial 26). Return to the B6318 and at a left turn go straight on towards Penton, then left to Nicholforest and Memorial 57. Go to the B6357 to Canonbie and then the A7 towards Longtown. Take a left at Hatch Hill Wood to St Andrew’s Church at Kirkandrews-on-Esk. (Memorial 54). Go back to the A7 into Longtown to the Community Centre (Memorial 13). Finally, take the road to the right of the Community Centre to Arthuret Church (Memorial 23).

TOUR 7A – a Walkable Route about 5 miles.

Start at Upperby Cemetery on Manor Road (Memorial 11). At Upperby Road turn left and left again onto St Ninian’s Road to London Road. Turn left into Carlisle to Harraby Green where Memorial 3 is on your right. Continue towards the City to St John the Evangelist Church on the right near traffic lights (Memorial 37). Turn right at Brook Street and left onto Fusehill Street. The former Fusehill Military Hospital is now the University Campus (Memorial 70). Turn left at Rydal Street and right at London Road. Turn left at the St Nicholas traffic lights and follow the road to the mini-roundabout. Take Boundary Road and Bishop Harvey Goodwin School (Memorial 5) is in the school grounds. Return  to the mini-roundabout and take Beaconsfield Street. Turn right and follow the road to the traffic lights by the Swimming Baths. Turn left and then take the right into Junction Street. The GPO Sorting Office on the left contains Memorial 21. IF DRIVING CONTINUE TO TOUR 8.

 

TOUR 8 or 7B – Requires a Car or otherr transport. If starting at Memorial 21, continue and turn left at the lights and continue on the Dalston Road into Dalston.

Alternatively, this tour starts at St Michaels Church in The Square at Dalston (Memorials 46 and 47); a little further on the right is the Victory Hall (Memorial 19). Continue out of Dalston on the B5299 and at the right hand bend go straight on towards Rose Castle. Continue to the river bridge and about 500 yards further on is the Raughtonhead Memorial 16. Retrace your route back towards Dalston but where the road bears right, go straight on towards Curthwaite. At Cumdivock, visit St John the Evangelist Churchyard (Memorial 43). Continue to the T-Junction, turn right into Thursby. At the roundabout take the Orton turning into Great Orton (Memorial 49). Continue to Burgh-by-Sands (Memorials 29 and 30) and on towards Beaumont (Memorial 24).
