MANOR ROAD , Carlisle.

This Memorial, a granite obelisk with carved draped urn on top, is set prominently in the centre of the public cemetery.  Inscribed on it are the names of the young men of Upperby and the surrounding hamlets, neighbours and friends,  who went off to war together.

Around this cemetery and its adjoining old burial ground of the Parish of St Cuthbert Without are many references on family gravestones to the men whose names are listed here, and to others commemorated elsewhere.

They were placed there by grieving parents, grandparents, and other relatives, as a personal tribute and token of remembrance.   This was a feature of the early years of the Great War when ordinary families, fearing that their lost children might be forgotten and, not having the wherewithal or influence to erect a personal memorial, arranged for the name to be placed on the grave of their ancestors.

You are invited, when next you visit the grave of a relative or friend, to look out for such inscriptions.   They too are Memorials to the Fallen.

This cemetery also holds the graves of some of those who returned badly wounded, to be cared for in military hospitals.   Sadly they did not have access to the medical science we take for granted today.   Many succumbed to their injuries and are interred in various local burial grounds, generally identified by the small white headstones of the CWGC.

The inscription is :- IN LOVING REMEMBRANCE OF THE MEN OF THE PARISH OF ST. CUTHBERT WITHOUT WHO FELL IN THE GREAT WAR 1914-1918.
