St Thomas a'Becket Churchyard, Farlam
This Granite Obelisk on a 2 stepped base surmounted by a Latin cross stands in the churchyard of St Thomas a' Beckett at Farlam, near Brampton.
This place of early habitation was, by the early 20th C, providing employment for a considerable rural community. However the young men of the district left parents and siblings and joined their countrymen in the “great adventure".
Many did not return. Others survived, though broken in mind and body, to see again their families and friends and this peaceful countryside.
Those who died in battle or from wounds are named on this prominent Memorial. Some, who lived for a sufficient time to be brought home to family, lie here in this ancient burial ground. A number of the graves bear personal family tributes to their lost sons and grandsons.

This is the family grave of WO2 (CSM) Charles Sydney Scott MM. Charles was born at Farlam in 1892 and died at home on 12th March 1918. He served with 8th Bn Border Regiment until his death at 26 years of age, even then quite young for a Company Sergeant Major.
However his name does not appear on the War Memorial. You are invited to visit his grave at the left rear of the church.
