Blakedown and Hagley

The Royal British Legion is recognised as the National Custodian of Remembrance.

With His Majesty The King as our Patron, The Royal British Legion is responsible for the annual Festival of Remembrance at The Royal Albert Hall and the ceremony at The Cenotaph in Whitehall. 'Remembrance Sunday', traditionally the second Sunday in November, and 'Armistice Day' (when the guns fell silent at the end of World War One) on 11th November are put aside to remember all those who have given their lives for their country so that we can enjoy the peace and freedom that we have today.

Within our Branch Area of Blakedown and Hagley, we run two Acts of Remembrance in November each year.

On Armistice Day, at 11.00am, (except if Armistice Day is on Remembrance Sunday) we hold  a short Act of Remembrance at Churchill War Memorial, to remember those whose names are listed on the War Memorial.  Wreaths are laid on behalf of the Royal British Legion, Blakedown Parish Council and any other organisations and individuals who wish to remember.

On Remembrance Sunday, typically at 9.30am, we hold an Act of Remembrance and Laying of Wreaths at Hagley War Memorial, with Wreaths being laid on behalf of the Royal British Legion, Hagley Parish Council, Hagley Ramblers Scout Group, Walton Girl Guides, Hagley Rotary Club and many other organisations and individuals.   This is followed by a parade in which the Scouts and Guides take part (courtesy of Hagley Parish Council) , followed by a Remembrance Sunday Service, the location of which may change year to year.  Details of the times and location are published in the Hagley Village News.

If you require further information or wish to lay a wreath, please contact Jonathan Plant on (07813) 785496 preferably in September or Early October, by which time arrangements will have been made to the current year, and there is time to obtain additional wreaths made at the Poppy Village.
