We wanted to take the opportunity to introduce you to Veterans Dementia Support UK, a Hampshire based charity providing support to Armed Forces Veterans living with dementia and their carers/loved ones.

We are the first dedicated dementia charity that works directly with the Armed Forces – whether Veterans living with dementia or those serving who have family members with dementia.

We cover the whole of the Country, but Hampshire is currently the only County that has a growing number of Dementia Support and Friendship Groups each week in the local community. These groups are run by volunteers with links to the Armed Forces and each session includes activities, reminiscing, sports, and social interactions and plenty of tea and cake.

We also hold support groups for veterans’ families and guide them along the long journey that dementia takes.

We currently have community support groups in Chandlers Ford, Hedge End, Winchester, North Baddesley, Lee on the Solent and in the coming months we will be increasing these to include the New Forest, Southampton, Portsmouth, Aldershot, and Andover/Tidworth once we have secured enough volunteers and venues.

When we are not meeting in person, we provide online support, support for veterans in care homes living with dementia, and a new Sporting Veterans initiative, take a look at our website for more information. www.veteransdementiasupport.co.uk

We want to ensure that any Veteran in Hampshire is made aware of the support that we provide locally and ensure that they and their families know that they are not alone and we are here for them along with other support with the Admiral Nurses

If you would like any more information or a poster, please don’t hesitate to contact us and you are very welcome to come and visit our groups.

Kind regards

Paul

RBL will be hosting a commemorative event marking the 15th anniversary of the end of Operation TELIC.  The event will consist of a daytime service on Friday 22nd May 2026 at the National Memorial Arboretum to mark 15 years since the conclusion of Operation TELIC, the UK’s military campaign in Iraq (2003–2011).
Those who would like to attend, this link should be used to log their interest & details:  Remembering the Iraq War - 15 Years On.  A registration form and e-ticket will follow afterwards.
I would also be grateful if you could share details of the event across your wider County network to ensure that those connected to Operation TELIC are aware of the opportunity to attend (they will also have to register their interest via the same link).  If you have any questions, please contact [email protected]
This commemorative event will bring together members of the serving and veteran communities who served during the Iraq War, families of those who served, including the bereaved and civilian contractors who supported British Forces and civil society in Iraq.  It will be a moment to reflect, remember and recognise the service and sacrifice of all those involved.

RBL has been busy working to ensure the Armed Forces Covenant is strengthened in the Armed Forces Bill, which has now been introduced in Parliament.

The Armed Forces Covenant is a national promise that those who serve, have served, and their families should not face disadvantage because of their service.

For over a decade, we’ve been calling for a stronger Covenant Duty

Those who have served in the Armed Forces often face unique challenges - for example, moving frequently during service can make it hard for families to receive consistent support from public services or for spouses and partners to build careers. This isn’t good enough.

As part of the Armed Forces Bill 2026, the Government will fulfil its manifesto pledge and legislate to extend the Armed Forces Covenant Duty to all UK Government departments and Devolved Governments, as well as a wide range of policies.

Now, we are calling on the Government to go further. We launched our Keep the Covenant Promise campaign report and an accompanying open letter to the Prime Minister at the end of September last year. Last month, RBL staff joined members of the Armed Forces community who have faced disadvantage to deliver the open letter to 10 Downing Street.

How you can help: You can sign up to our Campaigner Community to be kept up to date with this campaign as the Bill progresses through Parliament. We'll let you know how you can support our call on the Government to Keep the Covenant Promise.

Our call for a stronger Armed Forces Covenant continues. The Armed Forces Bill has now had its Second Reading in Parliament and the MPs who will sit on the Bill's Select Committee have been announced. This group of MPs will scrutinise the legislation in detail over the next few months.

Ahead of the Bill's next stage, we have been briefing MPs across Parliament to explain:

  • How inconsistent delivery disadvantages members of the Armed Forces community
  • The improvements that are needed to ensure the Covenant Duty delivers meaningful change

We're asking the Government to ensure that this Armed Forces Bill introduces a stronger Covenant Duty that is:

Delivered consistently: There must be clear guidance that sets consistent national standards of Covenant Duty delivery across the country

Backed by enough funding to support delivery: A dedicated programme with accessible tools and resources to ensure staff in organisations covered by the Duty fully understand its purpose

Properly measured so its impact is clear: This is crucial to achieve continued improvement of services and meet the changing needs of the Armed Forces community

We have been contacted by Dan Turner, who is a Special Constable with Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary (HIOWC), based in Aldershot. Dan is also a former member of the armed forces. Dan would be pleased to attend any Branches in the North of the County, so please do get in touch if this is of interest.

Dan says: I am looking to make contact with local veteran’s groups within the area, with the aim of promoting awareness of the FORCER Protocol on behalf of HIOWC. The Forcer protocol is a UK-wide initiative helping police quickly find missing veterans, reservists, or serving military members by giving officers instant access to pre-registered and vital personal information.

I would be very grateful to attend one of your sessions/events to deliver a short presentation promoting the Forcer protocol, explaining how the scheme could help veterans and also answer any questions that may be asked.

If you think me attending your event would helpful and appropriate, please do let me know. I am also simply available to contact should you or your members require further information regarding veteran’s issues.

Thank you for your time, and I look forward to hearing from you.

Kind regards,

Dan

Armed Forces Day - 27th June
This happens each year and I know that a lot of you celebrate Armed Forces Day.
This year the National Celebration will be held in North Hampshire.

is ongoing and if you are not already involved in campaigning you can sign up with the RBL and lend you voice to National Campaigns to help make the lives of service personnel, veterans and their families better.

Admiral Nurses

We work in partnership with Dementia UK to provide Admiral Nurses – a specialist service helping the Armed Forces community and their families living with dementia.

We know that when you’re caring for someone with dementia it can be hard to find the time to look after yourself. Our Admiral Nurses are there to support you, and those you’re caring for, to get the help you need.

We offer telephone support, and home visits can also be arranged if required.

This is a reminder that auto-forwarding inbox rules to external email addresses is prohibited and they will be removed.
Please make sure to read the System policy and Code of Conduct for guidance. They can be found on the MAP homepage. Each account has 2gb of space and when it is near full you will not be able to send or receive any more emails.

Please make sure to keep an eye on the size of your mailbox and delete large old emails.
Your email account should not be used as document storage. Please download large attachments and upload them into your document library on your MAP  Branch site for safe keeping. If you are sending out a mass email to a large number of email addresses (e.g. your members) I would strongly suggest multiple emails rather than one to all your members.

The Microsoft automated spamming system may view that email as suspicious which can lead to your email account being blocked. If you receive a suspicious email you can choose how to deal with it by right clicking on the email and going to “Security Options”.

Some emails may look like they are sent from someone you know. This is known as Spoofing. If you are at all unsure, please do not respond or click on any links in the email, contact the Sender to verify or just delete it.

How to check your email storage usage and empty your deleted items.

From within your RBL Community email account (Outlook Online) click on the cogwheel in the top right hand corner.

  1. Click on the link at the bottom of the Settings bar called “View all Outlook Settings”.
  2. Click on the General tab and then Storage tab.
  3. You will see at the top the amount of  storage you have used in Gigabytes (You have a max of 2GBs) and as a percentage.
  4. Underneath the Folders section you will see your storage usage broken down by folders.
  5. On the right hand side is the “Empty” buttons to clear out the relevant folders including your Deleted Items.
  6. Kind regards,

Tom Shepherd

Training for Standard Bearers.

All Standard Bearers are encouraged to attend the next available course

County Parade Marshall Dave Graham can be contacted on 01425 623102

All standard bearers are urged to take the training courses whether beginners or long-serving to enhance their position as the Legion’s presence in the community.

It has been noticed that Branches are sending Standard Bearers to events e.g. Festival of Remembrance at the Royal Albert Hall, who are not considered fit enough for a variety of reasons, to carry out their duties and are asked to leave the event.

Branch Chairmen are to ensure that before they send their Standard Bearer to any function he or she will be capable of carrying out their duties.

If your Standard Bearer is struggling to make it up the aisle on Remembrance Sunday it is suggested you look for a replacement.

It is now incumbent on all Parade Marshalls to ensure that the Standard Bearers under their control are fit to carry out their duties. If the Parade Marshall considers any Standard Bearer appears unfit then the Standard Bearer will be asked to leave the event.

Where a Branch has a Youth Member who wishes to take part in a Standard Bearers Competition and there is no Youth Standard he will carry the Branch Standard if it is a Youth only Competition.

If it is a combined competition i.e. County or Regional and the Branch Standard Bearer and Youth Member are taking part the following applies: On the inspection phase of the competition all competitors enter to be judged. The Branch Standard Bearer carries the Branch Standard - whatever mark he obtains for the care and presentation of the Standard is applied as the Youths marks for the same. For all other marks they are individually marked.

The Branch Standard Bearer and the Youth Standard Bearer share the use of the Branch Standard for all other Standard drills.
