The Royal British Legion is recognised as the national custodian of Remembrance.

Remembrance Sunday, the second Sunday in November, is the day traditionally put aside to remember all those who have given their lives for the peace and freedom we enjoy today.

Run By Thorne & Moorends Town Council

Remembrance Sunday is a special opportunity for the people of Thorne and Moorends to come together in Thorne Memorial Park at the Cenotaph to remember those that paid the ultimate sacrifice.  The Reverend David Green, Vicar of St Nicholas Church will conduct a Service of Remembrance. This will be followed by a Parade to the church led by the RBL Parade Marshal, Mr John Philips.

Details of events are as follows:

  • 10.30am Public assembles in Thorne Memorial Park, the Danum Scout Band will play music
  • 10.50am A Service of Remembrance led by the Reverend David Green, during the service we will remember all who lost their lives during wars & conflicts that we may be free today  
  • 10.59am The Parade Marshal brings the parade to attention for the Act of Remembrance: The Exhortation, The Last Post, 2 Minutes Silence, Reveille followed by the Kohima Epitaph
  • 11.04am Wreath laying:
  • The Mayor, Councillor Mark Holbrooke lays a wreath on behalf of Thorne & Moorends
  • The President of the Thorne & District Branch of The Royal British Legion lays a wreath on behalf of all the fallen
  • All other wreaths will be laid in order of Precedence
  • Prayers and a final hymn
  • Parade comes to attention for the National Anthem
  • 11.30am The Service at the Cenotaph is dismissed and everyone is invited to take part in the Parade to St Nicholas Church
  • 11.35am approximately the Parade forms up on the path ready for the march to St Nicholas Church for the Service of Remembrance, everyone is welcome to join the parade
  • The salute will be taken on the parade route by: the Mayor of Thorne & Moorends, Councillor Mark Holbrooke and the President of Thorne & District Branch of The Royal British Legion
  • On arrival at St Nicholas Church the Parade will be dismissed for a Service of Remembrance (all faiths welcome)

 The Branch is very proud of all the schools and youth organisations in Thorne & Moorends that take part in the Service and Parade.  The Town Council and the Royal British Legion would welcome the public to join us in Thorne Memorial Park and ask you to show your support.
