Stamford

Fourteen of members of Stamford Branch enjoyed a fascinating, if somewhat chaotic visit to RAF Scampton on 5 June. Getting through the gate could have been easier and timings were a bit relaxed. But it was worth it. WO Steve Shirley’s RAF Firefighting Museum has been assembled over 30 years and is now a fantastic collection of models, clothing, helmets, badges, posters, drawings and trophies.

Did you know that Stamford Fire Station won the Lincolnshire trophy five years running from 1924? They then moved on to the Heritage Centre which celebrates and commemorates the history of RAF Scampton since 1916 and of course the exploits of the Dambusters, and the Red Arrows. Again fascinating – and humbling.

The tour guides were very friendly, encyclopaedic in their knowledge, and generous with innumerable cups of tea and coffee, and access to the heavily subsidised Mess for lunch.
