History - In 2017 the Spenborough Branch received a request for funding for a new Standard for the Spen Valley Detachment of the Army Cadet Force.
The Legion, being unable to fund this because of our rules, passed the request onto our good supporters, the Masonic fraternity and the Cleckheaton Rotary Club.
Zetland Lodge in Cleckheaton and supported by Friendship and Aequitas Lodges obtained a grant of £500 from the West Riding Provincial Grand Master's Fund. The Cleckheaton Rotary Club donated £136 and since the standard with accessories was going to cost some £75 more, the balance was met by a personal donation from the Branch Chairman, Mr Eddie Morton.
At a meeting at the Cadet's drill hall on 26 October 2017, the cheques were duly handed over by Mr Harrington of Zetland Lodge to the Officer Commanding Sgt Adam Williams.
On previous occasions, the Cadets have been able to borrow the area standard from Huddersfield headquarters, but now they will be able to march with pride behind their own standard.
Standard Dedication- On Saturday 12 May 2018, the new standard was dedicated at a service held in St John's Church, Cleckheaton in the presence of The Deputy Lieutenant of West Yorkshire, Squadron Leader David Dinmore MBE, DL, RAF(Rtd), Mrs Lorna Dinmore and Baroness Pinnock of Cleckheaton.
The other Principal guests were the President of Cleckheaton Rotary Club Mr Stephen Willey, the Worshipful Master of the Lodge of Friendship, Brother Edward Horner, the Worshipful Master of Zetland Lodge, Brother David Batchelor and representing Aequitas Lodge Worshipful Brother Derek Binns.
The service was conducted by the former Branch Chaplain The Reverend Brunel James, assisted by the Army's Padre for Yorkshire North and West,The Reverend George Perera. The address was given by the Spenborough Branch Chairman Mr Eddie Morton.
Following the service, the cadets assembled in Church Street to be inspected by The Deputy Lieutenant, who afterwards took the salute at a march past.
The Cadets, under the command of Sergeant Adam Williams performed exceptionally well and the Spenborough Branch members look forward to the new Army Cadet Standard being carried at Legion events in the town.
