ARMISTICE DAY FOR SCHOOLCHILDREN
Spenborough branch members wanted to mark 100 years since the end of The Great War, by involving local schools in a special Armistice service so they will hopefully remember this significant date.
The closest schoolday was Friday 9 November 2018 and the event was to be held in Cleckheaton Memorial Park.
We were delighted with the response from local schools. Seventeen accepted the invitation to come along bringing over 400 pupils, the crowd totalling 592 including teachers, general public and Spenborough branch members.
The Deputy Lieutenant of West Yorkshire, Mrs Kate Moreton-Deakin accompanied by Mr Tony Moreton-Deakin and Barnoness Pinnock of Cleckheaton were the special guests.
The Deputy Lieutenant laid a wreath on behalf of Her Majesty The Queen, followed by Baroness Pinnock on behalf of Kirklees Council.
Two Pupils from each school proceeded to the top tier of the Memorial to lay a wreath on behalf of their school as follows:
Spen Valley High School - Heaton Avenue Primary School - Gomersal Primary School - Hightown Junior and Infants School - Hartshead Junior and Infants School - Headlands Church of England Primary School - Littletown Junior and Infants School - Roberttown Church of England Junior School - Gomersal St Mary's Church of England Primary School - Whitechapel Church of England Primary School - Scholes Village Primary - Birkenshaw Church of England Primary School - East Bierley Church of England Primary School - Highbank Junior and Infants School - Howard Park Community School - BBG Academy - Whitcliffe Mount School.
The Deputy Lieutenant, Mrs Kate Moreton-Deakin addressed the schoolchildren with a memorable address.
The Deputy Lieutenant, Baroness Pinnock and Branch Chairman Eddie Morton all commented on the excellent manner with which the children conducted themselves. They were a credit to the schools and staff of Spenborough.
