Spenborough

The Spenborough Branch were once again pleased to welcome as Principal Guests, the Deputy Lieutenant of West Yorkshire, Mrs Kate Moreton-Deakin and Mr Tony Moreton-Deakin, to the Armistice Day ceremony in Cleckheaton on 11 November 2016.

The parade to the Memorial was led in by Piper Mr Alan Harrison at 10.50am.

Branch Chairman, Mr Eddie Morton welcomed the Deputy Lieutenant and all our other guests, including about 150 schoolchildren from Heaton Avenue and Howard Park Community schools.

Conducting the Service was our Branch Chaplain Mr Terry Brewis, assited by the Reverend Brunel James from St John's and Father Nicholas Hird from St Peter's Roman Catholic Church.

Wreaths were laid on the Memorial by the Deputy Lieutenant on behalf of Her Majesty The Queen, for the Spenborough Branch by Mr Chris Wrightson (late Duke of Wellingtons Regiment) and Mrs Sandra Garstang (late Queen Alexandra's Nursing Corp) on behalf of the Women's Section. Mrs Wendy Walker laid a personal wreath on behalf of Lady Shaw, who for the first time in many years was unable to be there as she now lives away.

Children from the two schools also laid hand-made poppies and crosses.

The service was followed by tea and biscuits at Syke Fold Grange. The Branch extends its thanks to the Warden and residents of Syke Fold and to the Women's Section for all their hard work.
