The Deputy Lieutenant of West Yorkshire, Mr Gordon Tollefson CStJ, JP, DL, FRSPH, ACH, and The Mayor and Mayoress of Kirklees, Councillor Jim Dodds BEM and Mrs Carol Dodds, were the Principal Guests at Spenborough's Armed Forces Day.
The event was held on Saturday, 25 June 2016 on a beautiful summers day in Cleckheaton Memorial Park and it was conducted by the Branch Chaplain Terry Brewis.
The Deputy Lieutenant addressed the assembly and spoke about the work of the Armed Forces and the debt we owe to them for making our lives safe.
The Mayor of Kirklees spoke about the work of The Royal British Legion, who, he said, from personal experience in The Royal Signals, not only look after the serving and past veterans, but also their families.
The Mayor's charity for his year in Office is the Royal British Legion. He has persuaded local Companies and Organizations to sponsor a calender and all the proceeds will go to the Legion.
Branch Chairman Eddie Morton gave the Kohima Epitaph and two minutes silence was observed.
Our local Air Training Corps were well represented and four were selected as wreath bearers, a task they performed with style.
Wreaths were laid by The Deputy Lieutenant, The Mayor of Kirklees, Branch Member Mr Terrance Rukin for the Royal British Legion and Mrs Sandra Garstang for the Womens Section, Royal British Legion.
Following closing prayers and The National Anthem, guests retired to St Paul's Church Hall for refreshments, once again provided by the Women's Section to whom the Branch is again indebted.
