Spenborough

It had been raining all morning, but just as on D-Day the Branch Chairman said that there would be a break in the weather so "we go" for the Remembrance Day parade at 14.30hrs.

His forecast proved to be correct and a large parade left the side of Cleckheaton Town Hall heading for Cleckheaton Memorial Park.

The Branch was pleased to welcome once again the Deputy Lieutenant of West Yorkshire, Mr Gordon Tollefson CStJ, JP, DL, FRSPH, ACH.

The parade was led by our local West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Band and being one of the finest military style bands in the country the large contingents marched beautifully. An appliance from Cleckheaton Fire Station brought up the rear.

Forming up around the War Memorial, the Exhortation and Kohima Epitaph were delivered by the Branch Chairman Mr Eddie Morton. After The Last Post and Reveille played by the band's bugler, the wreaths were laid.

The Memorial was saluted by the Parade during the march past and headed off back to the Town Hall (by an unusual route) for dispersal.

The Remembrance Service itself was held in St John's Church, officiated by the Branch Chaplain Terry Brewis and former Branch Chaplain, The Reverend Brunel James. The Branch is indebted once again to the Spenborough Branch Women's Section for providing most welcome tea and biscuits after the Service.
