Spenborough

The Deputy Lieutenant of West Yorkshire, Mrs Kate Moreton-Deakin and Mr Tony Moreton-Deakin were the principal guests of Spenborough's Armistice Day Service held on Wednesday 11 November 2015.

Other distinguished Guests were Lord Shaw of Northstead JP, DL and Lady Shaw and their son, Major General (retd) The Honourable Jonathan D Shaw CB, CBE, MA(Oxon) (late Parachute regiment), together with Baroness Pinnock of Cleckheaton and Councillor Andrew Pinnock.

On a cloudy and windy day, the weather kept fine and the crowds around the War Memorial were the biggest seen for some years. It was particularly pleasing to see children from The Howard Park Community School, Whitechapel C of E School and Littletown Juniors.

The Service was conducted by the Branch Chaplain Mr Terry Brewis and marshalled by the Branch Chairman, Mr Eddie Morton.

The strikes and chimes of Big Ben were relayed live at 11.00am and the people present observed a respectful silence for two minutes.

Wreaths were laid by The Deputy Lieutenant representing the Queen, Mr John Lamb for the Spenborough Branch of The Royal British Legion and a personal family wreath by Lord and Lady Shaw.

The children from Littletown School also were invited to place poppies which they had made into the top tier of the Memorial.

The Ceremony finished following the playing of The National Anthem.

Tea and biscuits (and scones) were enjoyed in the relaxed atmosphere of St Pauls Church Hall.
