Spenborough

16 October 2014

One one of his many visits to Spenborough Branch events by The Deputy Lieutenant of West Yorkshire, Mr Gordon Tollefson, Branch Chairman, Eddie Morton, was updating him on the support received from local schools.

He highlighted the extra effort Whitechapel C of E always seemed to put into remembrance and supporting the Poppy Appeal by making and selling chocolates, particularly this year which marks the Centenary of the start of The Great War.

The school's efforts so impressed The Deputy Lieutenant, he suggested that if he could arrange for The Lord Lieutenant to call in at he school when en-route to another engagement, would that be acceptable to the Branch and the school? As the Chairman said " well who would turn down an offer like that?"

The visit took place an Thursday 16 October 2014 and The Lord Lieutenant requested that Branch members be present.

The teachers and children certainly prepared well for the visit and Dr Roscoe commented in a later letter that she was most impressed. Branch members expressed their delight with the  impeccable behaviour of the children (Ofsted has rated them "outstanding").

Following the visit to the school, The Lord Lieutenant was accompanied by a number of children to Whitechapel Church (the olde White Chapel in the north). She viewed this ancient church and the children proudly showed off their handiwork, when they assisted Branch members in cleaning the military headstones earlier in the year, ready for the 1914 - 2014 Commemoration.
