CLECKHEATON'S FINEST
The Spenborough Roll of Honour for the
First World War
Researched
by
Charlie Turpin
Spenborough encompasses the towns and villages of Cleckheaton, Liversedge, Gomersal, Scholes, Flush, Millbridge, Hightown, Roberttown, Norristhorpe and some smaller communities, in the heart of West Yorkshire.
The War Memorial in Cleckheaton now lists the names of 508 servicemen and one female nurse who lost their lives in the Great War or died in the three years after from wounds received or illness associated with the war. When the Memorial was unveiled in 1922 by Lt Colonel Alfred Mowat it commemorated 470 dead, 4 names were added in the late 1920's and a further 35 were added in July 2000 following my research and these appear at the end of the roll. The total losses form about 20% of the young men who enlisted during the conflict. Many more men died in the 1920's and 30's from the effects of wounds and gas but their contribution was largely unrecognised.
Lambs to the slaughter. The pictures show some of the young men of the Cleckheaton Company of the 4th Battalion Duke of Wellington's West Riding Regiment before they went to war in April 1915, many of them never to return. This Territorial Battalion was the local one and is referred to frequently in the text.

ROGER , HERBERT
50884 Private 10th Cheshire Regiment.
Herbert was born in Cleckheaton in 1899, the oldest son Christian and Rosine Roger. He had a younger brother Eric and 3 sisters. The parents were both born in Germany and came to England in the 1880’s.They established a successful Pork Butchers business at 28 Northgate, Cleckheaton, known locally as Porky Rogers.
Unfortunately as a German national Christian was sent to an internment camp on the Isle of Man for the duration of the First World War.
Herbert joined the Army age 18 in February 1917 and after training proceeded to France to fight the Germans in May of that year. During his training he was sentenced to be confined to barracks for 3 days for being unshaven on Parade! He was involved in the terrible Battles of Messines and Passchendaele and during the 1918 German Spring Offensive he was posted “Missing - presumed dead” on 24 March. However the family was informed in May via the Red Cross that he was alive and was a Prisoner of War in Germany.
When the war ended POW’s were gradually repatriated and he arrived at Dover on 26 December 1918 and was then transferred to barracks in Shrewsbury to await processing for demobilization. He was eventually granted 2 months demobilization leave and returned to Cleckheaton where he applied to the War Office to resume his trade as a butcher.
In the meantime Spenborough Council and the Forget Me Not Fund organized a Civic Dinner for returning POW’s from the area (95 in total, 9 of who subsequently died). Herbert accepted the invitation and replied that he would attend the function on 15 March accompanied by his mother.
Unfortunately Herbert was admitted to the Bradford War Hospital on 12 March in a “delirious and exhausted condition likely to have been aggravated by conditions under which he lived as a POW”. He died 2 days later. The official cause of death was recorded as “pneumonia and influenza”. His death was announced to his many friends at the Civic Welcome Home Dinner on 15 March.
Herbert, a Wesleyan, was buried in Cleckheaton Old Cemetery in a war grave on 19 March 1919 – the date of what would have been his 21st birthday.
On release from internment Christian Roger continued the family butchering business until the mid 1960’s.

In 2019, local historian Tony Dunlop researched the life of Private William George Simpson.
Private William George Simpson of The Machine Gun Corps, is buried at Gomersal Methodist Chapel ( known locally as The Pork Pie Chapel because of its bowed front). His life was most interesting but unknown, until local military historian Tony Dunlop, undertook extensive research and published his findings.
Before the Great War, William played Rugby League and was a winger with Wakefield Trinity, being the Club's leading try scorer, his record remaining until overtaken in 1959/60 season. Unfortunately, he suffered kidney damage in the 1912/13 season and only played a handful more games.
He was licensee of The West End Hotel in Gomersal when war was declared. He joined the Army under the Derby Scheme in March 1915, mobilised in November 1916 and posted to france in April 1917 with the machine Gun Corps.
William survived the War and was posted home on 8 February 1919 but was admitted before demobilization to the Northumberland War Hospital in Newcastle suffering from Bright's disease, from which he succumbed on 10 May 1919.

ADDENDA
During the many years I spent researching the names on the War Memorial I came across over a further 100 casualties with Spenborough connections. Each case was carefully examined and I finally ascertained that 35 of these should have been included on the Memorial. In 1921 when the appeal was made in the Spenborough Guardian for names to be included on the Memorial some families had left the area or had died out in the 'flu" epidemic following the war, some were illiterate and some actually refused to believe their loved ones were dead. Genuine mistakes were also made by the typesetters and engravers.
However on the 1 July 2000, the 35 names were added to the Memorial in a moving ceremony in front of a large crowd which included some of the descendents of those finally honoured. Since then I have found another individual who should also have appeared on the Memorial and no doubt there will be many more. The additional names appear hereunder.

Field Marshall Haigh, known as Butcher Haigh to the troops, before sitting down to dinner that evening at his Chateau 30 miles behind the front line wrote in his diary “ I am inclined to believe from further reports that few of the 8th Corps left their trenches ”. Tell that to those listed below.

Many of the missing proved to be dead.
Many, many more died of their wounds in the following day, weeks, months and even years. Several committed suicide unable to live with the horrors they had witnessed.
Most of the casualties were sustained during the first hour.
The 10th and 13th Platoons of C and D Companies, Leeds Pals, led the attack and therefore bore the brunt of the casualties.
EPILOGUE
The loss of all these young men was a devastating blow to their families and the whole community. Unfortunately some families had even more reason to grieve as the bodies of their loved ones were never found or identified. "No known grave" appears many times in this narrative, in fact over 40% of the Spenborough casualties, which equates to over 200 men, are named on the Memorials to the Missing. Pictured below at the time of their dedication in the late 1920's, and early 1930's are the four largest such Memorials. In clockwise order they are Thiepval (Somme), Arras (Arras), Menin Gate (Ypres), and Tyne Cot (Passchendaele).
The Thiepval memorial commemorates 73,000 missing; Arras 36,000; Menin Gate 55,000 and Tyne Cot 33,000. In the words of poet Lawrence Binyon :
They shall not grow old, as we that are left grow old
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn
At the going down of the sun, and in the morning
We will remember them.
