New Access Ramp for Cleckheaton War Memorial

After more than two years of planning and discussions, a ramp has now been constructed to enable less mobile visitors to access the top tier of the War Memorial.

This followed a number of requests from members of the public who felt excluded from the proceedings, when these are held on the top tier and only accessible by means of a number of steps.

Spearheaded by the Branch Chairman, Eddie Morton, together with Clifford Frear and the late Derrick Yates and assisted by park staff. a local builder finally constructed the ramp at no charge, which was fine gesture for the disabled people of Spenborough.

After each event, the railing section is replaced to maintain the security of the top tier. The ramp was first used yesterday on the Flag raising for Armed Forces Week and is shown below.

It's the detail that matters!

Branch Secretary David Walker vacuuming the aisle carpet at St John's church prior to the service for the new Army Cadet standard dedication, supervised by Mrs Annette Smith.

His wife says it's the first time he has had hold of a vacuum in 50 odd years of married life. "Mind you" she said " he had to be told how to switch it on and push it backwards and forwards!"

Spenborough Women's Section

Still going strong, The Spenborough Branch Women's Section (a Branch in its own right) provide invaluable support for the Spenborough Branch. They can always be seen fundraising at their own coffee morning in October and provide most welcome refreshments at Branch events.

One of the members (whose modesty has requested that she remain nameless) saw some "poppy" material, obtained some Women Section badges and then produced aprons for all the members. Some of the members are shown below at their recent meeting on 24 May 2018.

Marking Military Gravestones

It was decided by members at the last branch meeting, that the gravestones in local churchyards of Spenborough men who died in the Great War 1914-1918, will be marked in this Armistice Centenary year, by means of a Union Flag.

Whilst there are 28 graves from the Great War, there are also 28 from WW2 and these will be accorded the same honour.

This will be undertaken by branch members.
