On Friday 9th September, Alan Frankland the Branch President, swam the final half mile of his “Channel Swim”. Alan wanted to raise money for the Poppy Appeal, so decided that he would swim that distance at Redcar Swimming pool a total of 22 miles in half mile sessions. On Friday the branch members, the Mayor Cllr Barry Hunt with Standard Bearers and members of the public escorted him to the pool area. He was then joined in the pool by the Chairman and Poppy Appeal Organiser to support him on his final few lengths. He has done remarkably well for 83 years old and has raised over £700.

Article from Zetland FM news site:

A local octogenarian is raising money for charity by swimming the length of the English Channel.

83-year-old Alan Frankland is branch president of the Royal British Legion in Redcar and is raising money for the Poppy Appeal by swimming the equivalent of the English channel at Redcar swimming pool by doing the distance in half mile stints of 32 lengths at a time.

So far he has so far swum 15 miles and hopes to complete the full distance by the end of this month.

He is hoping that some of the other members of the local branch of the British Legion will join him on the last half mile.

Any one wishing to sponsor Alan can do so by contacting the Redcar branch of the Legion.
