Highlights of the Year - Charity Rugby Match
Saturday 2nd April 2011 saw a Charity Rugby Match held in
honour of Rifleman James Brown, 3rd Battalion Rifles, who was
killed on active service in Helmund Province, Afghanistan, December
2009 whilst averting a bombing on an Afghan market. He was just 18
years of age and came from Orpington.
His father Steve, is a member of Petts Wood Branch and
Club. The rugby match named the "Rifleman James Brown Memorial
game" was held at the ground of Westcombe Park RFC, Orpington and
was in the main arranged by Mark Birch of the Petts Wood Royal
British Legion. Mark is also the Petts Wood Branch Parade Marshall.
The teams consisted of Westcombe Park Colts and the Bromley
Barbarians. Both teams were led onto the field by the standard
bearers of Petts Wood and Orpington Branches and accompanied by the
Pipes and Drums of the London Scottish Regiment.
There followed a 2 minute silence with the Last Post being
played by a bugler from The Rifles. A time for thought and
reflection. The match was attended by James father Steve and other
members of the family, the Mayor of Bromley together with the
President and Chairman of Petts Wood , President of Orpington
supported by members of both branches and members of the British
Legion Riders Branch.
The game was a great success with so much enthusiasm being shown
by both sides. Final result Westcombe Park 17 - Barbarians 22. A
big thank you to those who assisted and without whose help none of
this would have been possible. Also to the hundreds of people who
attended and gave their support.
