This March, Veterans and Branch members from the Oxted and District Branch of The
Royal British Legion, are coordinating with local community groups in Oxted, to give up
their beds and sleep under the stars. For one night, they’ll brave the night in solidarity with
the thousands of veterans who have to sleep out every night.
The Great Tommy Sleep Out is more than a fundraising event – it’s a lifeline. Every pound
raised helps Royal British Veterans Enterprise (RBVE) continue to create jobs, provide
homes and build communities.
The Great Tommy Sleep Out is more than a fundraising event – it’s a lifeline. Every pound raised helps Royal British Veterans Enterprise (RBVE) continue to create jobs, provide homes and build communities.
It’s a tough night, and as the cold sets in, participants get a glimpse of what it could be like to have no bed to sleep in. Schools, families, businesses, and communities unite to say: no veteran should be left behind.
RBVE’s mission to empower veterans and people with disabilities by creating jobs, providing homes, and building communities across the UK.
Fund Raising:
OXTED Fund raising will be via Just Giving Link Oxted team page;
Each Oxted community group wishing to participate is encouraged to sign up to RBVE.
Considerations:
The following considerations are advised. Each community group will most likely have their own specific requirements and guidance to follow.
Sleep Out Locations:
Location and Legality
- Venue Choice: Select a safe and legal location. Private land (like a garden or secure workplace) is recommended.
- Permissions: Always obtain written permission from the landowner or building manager before planning.
- Public Spaces: If planning to use a public park or street, you must contact your local council and the police for necessary permissions and licenses.
Indoor Contingency: Have an indoor backup space or be prepared to reschedule in case of severe or dangerous weather conditions.
Safety and Risk management;
Each participating group should consider:
- Risk Assessment: Conduct a thorough risk assessment identifying hazards like fire, slips, or weather-related issues.
- First Aid: Ensure a qualified first aider is present and that a fully stocked first aid kit is easily accessible.
- Safeguarding: All participants under 18 must have parental permission and be overseen by a registered adult.
- Communication: Organisers and participants should carry a charged mobile phone and a torch.
- Participant Log: Maintain a register of all attendees and their emergency contact details.
Equipment and Logistics
- Shelter: Decide if participants will use tents, build their own shelters, or sleep under the stars.
- Personal Gear: Remind participants to bring warm, appropriate clothing (woolly hats, gloves, socks) and suitable sleeping bags for cold temperatures.
- Facilities: Ensure access to drinking water and adequate toilet facilities for all participants.
- Waste Management: Provide rubbish bins and ensure the site is fully cleared after the event.
