Members and friends,
It is a privilege to write to you for the first time as Chairman of the Newton Abbot Branch of the Royal British Legion. I do so with a strong sense of responsibility, but also with genuine optimism about what we can achieve together.
The Royal British Legion stands for service, remembrance, and comradeship. These values are brought to life through the commitment of our members and volunteers, and our branch has a proud record of supporting the Armed Forces community locally. My aim as Chairman is to build on that foundation while ensuring our branch is visible, active, and firmly positioned at the heart of the Newton Abbot community.
One of our key priorities going forward is raising awareness of the work of the RBL. This includes attending local events such as fetes, shows, and community days, and hosting information or awareness stalls where we can engage with the public, explain what we do, and encourage new membership and support. These events are vital - not only for fundraising, but for ensuring the Legion remains understood, relevant, and accessible.
To do this effectively, we need volunteers. Manning stalls and attending events does not require specialist knowledge - just a willingness to give some time, talk to people, and represent the values of the Legion. Even a small commitment makes a significant difference, and shared effort ensures no one is overburdened. I would strongly encourage members to consider supporting these activities whenever possible.
Equally important is your input. I am keen to hear suggestions for events we should attend or opportunities where the branch could have a presence. If you are aware of local fetes, shows, commemorations, or community gatherings where the RBL could raise its profile, please bring them forward. This branch belongs to its members, and your ideas will help shape our direction.
The challenges we face - sustaining membership, increasing visibility, and recruiting volunteers - are shared across many branches. They are also challenges we can meet, together, with energy, cooperation, and a renewed sense of purpose.
I look forward to working with you all as we strengthen our branch, extend our reach, and continue to serve those who have served. With your support, the Newton Abbot Branch can remain a respected, active, and central part of our community.
Yours in comradeship,
Dave Cair
