Lisburn

Branch History

The Lisburn branch was first established in 1921. It was formed from the merger of several old comrades organisations formed during the first world war. These were the Comrades Of The Great War, The National Association of Discharged Sailors and Soldiers, The National Federation of Discharged and Demobilised Sailors and Soldiers and the fundraising department of the Officer's Association.

The club is on the site of the original Lisburn post of the Comrades Of The Great War in Sackville Street, Lisburn,  and the first general meeting of the branch was in October 1921.

Early significant members of the branch were :-

Lt Col J G Johnston MC JP RAMC who was a well known physician in the Lisburn area. He was branch president for many years. He had served as a medical officer with 36th Ulster Division

Mr Charles Montgomery, who owned a Tobacconist and Confectioners shop in Castle Street. He had been severely wounded when serving with 2nd Battalion Royal Irish Rifles. He was the branch honorary secretary for many years.

Mr Murray, Ulster Bank, Lisburn. Former officer in the Northamptonshire Regiment. He was treasurer of the branch.

Ex Sergeant Thomas Davis MM, a veteran of many campaigns prior and including WW1.

Sports and activities in which the branch actively participated over the years have been Snooker, Darts and Amateur Dramatics.

In 1971, on it's 50th Anniversary, the British Legion became the Royal British Legion.

The branch has a long and proud history of helping and supporting veterans and is looking forward to celebrating it's centenary in 2021.
