Horsham Branch

Band History

The Horsham Town Military Band was established in 1860 and enjoyed a high reputation for many years.  The war years of 1939 -1945 almost finished the band but despite being reduced to only a few members they refused to give up and in 1945 the job of rebuilding began. In 1948 the Horsham Town Military Band was adopted by the Horsham Branch under its new title of the Horsham British Legion Band.

The band needed to have its own headquarters and in 1952 the proposal was made to build their own.  In 1954 foundations were laid and the band members along with family and friends started the work.  Altogether some 42 men helped in the building at different times, some were skilled craftsmen but many were not.

In November 1956 the new building, behind what was at that time the Horsham Legion Headquarters, was opened by Mr A E Edwin, the Horsham Branch President, who when unveiling the plaque said ‘it shows what enthusiasm and devotion can do’.  Mr Edwin was surprised as he pulled back the Legion flag to see on the plaque that the name of the new hall was The Edwin Hall.

Coming forward to the present day, the band, now known as the Sussex Band of the Royal British Legion (Horsham) still shares the hall with the Horsham Branch.
