Heckmondwike in WW1

War MemorialOver 1300 Men from Heckmondwike enlisted during WW1 and of these 157 who gave their lives are commemorated on the memorial in Green Park, Heckmondwike.

It was in March 1920 that the local ratepayers of Heckmondwike resolved to erect a memorial to the fallen of the town and to also commision a Roll of Honour listing all those who served, together with purchasing a building to be used as a Nurses and maternity home.

The monument was commisioned from Wright & Sons of Bradford at a cost of £699 10s and would consist of a Scottish granite cross resting on a octagonal 4 tier base with the names of the fallen in lead.

On Saturday 27th May 1922 the memorial was unveiled by Cllr J.Parker, Chairman of Heckmondwike Council.

The Roll of Honour and its glass topped oak cabinet was made by C Pratt & Sons of Bradford at a cost of £117.Around 1350 names were written in black ink in a vellum paged, Gilt edged book.The next of kin each received a fascimilie copy with remaining copies sold at one shilling. 1000 copies were produced.

The Roll of Honour is on display in the old reading room at Heckmondwike Library.

A further memorial made of wood and consisisting of several panels exists in St James's Church Heckmondwike in memory of 208 Heckmondwike men who lost their lives. A seperate metal plaque contains the names of 17 men of the church who gave their lives.
