Poppy Appeal and Remembrance at Cambridge United
Remembrance Football Match
The FA Cup first round match at Cambridge United v Chester City was the annual CUFC Remembrance Fixture and supporters were encouraged to bring along their spare change to raise funds for the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal.
Collectors from the Air Training Cadets (104 City of Cambridge Squadron) and local ex RAF veterans collected in and around the ground and before the match there was a ceremony to honour the sacrifices made by servicemen and women across the United Kingdom.
Eddie (Standard Bearer from Cherry Hinton branch) and Josh (Bugler from Cambridge Brass Band) did a fantastic job on behalf of RBL, together with 10 cadets and Flt Lt Ian Griffiths from the ATC, CUFC supporting veterans together with Alfie & Tom representing the British Army.
One of the veterans, RAF Flight Sergeant (retired) Richard Stephen, posted this message after the game:
"Thank you to Amelia, Gina and Dan at CUFC for allowing this prestigious event to take place, to Dave who supplied all the collecting buckets, poppies and pins, the two very smart army lads, the outstanding performance of the RAF air cadets and their splendid Flight Lieutenant, the standard bearer and bugler along with my RAF team. All were a credit and it was an absolute pleasure to assist in this most worthy event.
It was also very touching to receive applause from supporters of both teams as we made our way around the pitch to hand in our buckets. It shows that people really care."
