The War in the Far East - a presentation by Gerry Norden

A presentation on the realities of World War Two in the Far East

On Tuesday 25th November our Chairman Gerry Norden presented a wonderful and informative talk about the surrender in Singapore and the subsequent privations of allied prisoners of war.

Gerry had recently returned from an organised remembrance trip to the Far East and spoke to a packed Function Room in the Six Bells on what the British and allied forces were faced with leading up to the surrender at Singapore in February 1942 and their life thereafter as prisoners of war.

East Anglia was particularly affected by this as large numbers of service personnel came from 18th Division, which comprised the former County Regiments, the Cambridgeshires, Norfolks and Suffolks. Many never returned home, including Private Alec Sargent, Lance Corporal Ernest cutting and Private Philip Hardwick, who are commemorated on Fulbourn War Memorial and who we remembered on the evening.
