Ferryhill Station Branch commemorates VJ Day

The evening was started by Mrs Carolyn Norris who played Reveille on a borrowed bugle to a resounding round of applause, those persons who gathered joined in with our singer of the evening Jay J Stephens and after singing along to some of the favourites of the mid 1940’s stakes were raised and everybody joined in with the Ferryhill version of Last Night of the Proms and sang along with Elgar’s Land of Hope and Glory.
Following this an Auction was held with many interesting lots, including a tankard made from RMS Mauritania that had local interest and many bids, along with Darlington Hippodrome, Halo hairdressers and North Yorkshire Moors Steam Railway who sent vouchers to be auctioned, Ferryhill residents donated other items to be auctioned, including our Mayor Angus Ferguson.
Ferryhill Community Sports and Social Club provided the concert room on the first floor and our singer for the evening, they also sponsored, along with the Brewery, the prizes for the fancy dress competition further adding to the party atmosphere. The prizes were donated to Ferryhill Station Branch of The Royal British Legion.
Our ladies members ably ran a raffle in the downstairs entrance way and when the proceeds were all added up we raised £1,215:50 on the evening.
