On the 5th December 1916 an explosion occurred in hut 42 at the Barnbow Munitions Factory in Leeds which killed 35 women and girls that were working on making ammunition for our troops in WW1.
The local society with the help of Councillor Pauline Grahame obtained funding to erect a memorial stone for the Barnbow Lasses that were killed in the explosion in 1916.
A service to mark the 100th anniversary of the explosion was held on the 5th December 2016 in Manston Park close to where the factory stood. During the service the Lord Mayor of Leeds Councillor Gerald Harper read out details of what happenned on the day of the explosion. Councillor Pauline Grahame also made a speech during the service. All the names of he 35 that lost their lives was read out.
