Diss Express 13th November 1970
THE REMEMBRANCE SUNDAY
Was held this year in Lexfield Baptist Church.GI`s and British Legion attended, the Standard Bearers were Mr E. Bloom and Mr Kenneth Maid.
The Vicar, the Rev. Dr. R. A. Wham, conducted the service, and read the Exhortation.
The address was given by the Baptist Minister, the Rev. L. R. Garrard.
The organist was Mrs. R. Booty.
After the service wreaths were laid on the War Memorial by Mr. and Mrs. T. Revell, for the Men and Women's Sections of the British Legion.
Member also attended the events at St. Mary's Church.
Wreaths were placed on the memorial in the church by Mrs. J. Oliver and Mr. Horace Nest.
The Lessons were read by S. Essay and Mr. T. Revell; Mr. C. H. Shields reed the Exhortation.
THE RECTOR, the Rev. W. Armitage preached and coordinated the Remembrance Day at the Parish Church.
The lesson was read by Mr. Frank Wenden.
M. C. Borthwick read the names of the fallen in the two World Wars and also recited the Legion's tribute.
Wreaths were laid at the memorial and a two minutes silence was observed.
The church collection of over £4 was for the Haig Fund.
MEMBERS of the Bacton and District British Legion attended Cotton Parish Church on Sunday morning for the annual Remembrance Day Service, which was conducted by the Rector of Cotton and Joint Branch Chaplain, the Rev. R. E. Lark. with Mrs. Woolard at the organ.
The parade was commanded by the Chairman. Mr. R. T. recited the Legion's Exhortation and the names of the fallen in the two wars in the three parishes were read out.
The standards were carried by Ms. E. Leggett and Mrs. R. Pinner.
The Lesson was read by Mr. M. H. Van der Gucht, the branch president.
After service the and congregation gthered around the memorial in the Churchyard for the laying of the wreath by Kr. Elmer.
East Harling The RECTOR. the Rev. D. W. Price conducted the Remembrance Day service at East Parish Church.
It was followed by the usual wreath laying ceremony at the war memorial.
Mr. Edward Jackson was the organist and the choir led the singing.
Members of British Legion, men and women, were marshalled by Mr. Jim Frost and preceded by the Legion standard, carried by Mr. S. W. Boggle.
The names of the fallen from East and West Harling were read by Mr. Cyril Maow, and the collection of £10 19s 0d was raised for the Haig Fund.
Legion members attended a similar service at Bridgham.
Browning this week,marks the 50th anniversary of the founding of the Legion, Diss branch was invited to take the salute to commemorate the half century and to the first world was veterans.
Another 1914-18 campaigner also took part in the service.
He war Mr. I. James who read the poem "The Legion of the living salutes the Legion of the dead".
World War II was represented by Mr. George Goodall, who read the Legion's exhortation.
At the Church of St Mary's, a record number of five denominations either took part or were represented at the service.
The service was conducted by the Rector of Diss, Canoe E. L. the Lesson was read by Brig. E. Slimy, of the Salvation Army; Fr. E. Rees-Jones, Roman Catholic priest, led the Act of Penitence; and the superintendent of the Diss Methodist Circuit, the Rev. David Lawrence, preached.
The fifth denomination at the service was the Baptists.
Ten standards were on parade at the service and 16 wreaths were laid at the war memorial by various organizations afterwards.
Mr. Browning was supported on the saluting base by Mr. J. H. Swains, vice-chairman of Diss U.D.C.; Commander. Patrick Taylor, Diss representative on No 9 Group; Mrs. E. Corbeu, a vice-president of the Women's Section of Diss British Legion and Grp. Capt. R. Menzies, president of the Diss R.A.F.A.
REMEMBRANCE DAY ceremony at Benham Memorial took place on Sunday.
The British Legion was is attendance and the standard was aided by Ms. P. Bly. A poppy wreath was laid by Women's Section representative Mrs. R. Fox and the bugler was from New Beckenham Band.
Afterwards a service was conducted in Church by the Rector The Rev. A. A. Bennett and the collection of £6 16 10d was presented to the Fund.
KENNINGHAM, The Attendance was down on previous years in the Remembrance Day parade at Kenninghall, chiefly because of sickness and the weather, which prevented some elderly members of the British Legion being present.
The service was conducted by the Vicar, the Rev. Hwy Bridges, and the was preached by the Rev. Hwy Saunderson.
Wreaths were laid at the Memorial by Mr. Ray Fuller, Mrs. V. Clarke and Mrs. L. Monet.
The Legion Standards were carried by Mr. E. Nobeth and Mrs. P. Mellott, and the bugler was a member of the New Buckenham Band.
Others taking an active part in the service were Colonel J. B. Chillingworth, Mr. R. Mallon, Mr. I. Cattermole, Mr. G. Raley, Mr. M. Barudgan and Mr. F. W. Stone.
The collection was in aid of the Haig Fund.

The Colours stand proudly high
As the parade arrives at St Mary's Church, Diss. after a procession through the town led by the band of Diss Salvation Army.
Diss St Mary's Church, The salute was taken by the President of Diss Royal British Legion. Comdr. P. H. B. Taylor. O.B.E., who was accompanied by Lady Mann. C.B.E, Chairman of the women's section.
Also on the platform was Mr Robert Manning Chairman of Diss Town Council, and Group Captain R. Menzies. President of the Diss branch R. A. F. A.
Seventeen wreaths were laid by organisations of the town.
Botesdale A United Service was held at the Chapel of Ease.
The parade from Garden House Lane was led by the Gislingham Silver Band under Mr Minor, and was followed by Officers of Botesdale and District Royal Legion, men and women's branches, and a detachment of the Red Cross Cadets.
Branch Chairman, Mr Nightingale was in charge of the parade, and the service was conducted by Canon A. T. Bowden.
Prayers were led by Mr J. H. Goddard and Mr Holt-Wilson and the address was given by the Rev. G. Whitcontbe.
Long Stratton The Army Cadet Force, held a short of remembrance at the War Memorial where Wreaths were laid by Lt. Gen. Sir Terence Airey (Royal British Legion). Mrs 3. Boulton (Women's Section), and Cpl. W. Shnpkin (Army Cadet Force).
The last post and reveille were sounded by Sgt. N. Folkard and I/Cpl. W. Moore. buglers of the Army Cadet Force.
At service which followed in St Mary's Church. the Legion Standard was carried by Mrs L. Hayes. escorted by Mr C. Searle and Mr J. Savory.
A Lesson was read by Legion Chairman. Mr N. Coley. and the choir was conducted by Mrs R. Whiley.
The Large congregation Included one worshipper over the age of 100
A GROUP of young people and adults representing Long Stratton Congregational Church attended the Royal British Legion Act of Remembrance at the Village War Memorial and the service in St Mary's Church.
Junior Church was held a little earlier than usual for the younger children.
67 members attended with two new members being welcomed.
At 11 a.m. the children had their. own Act of Remembrance in a simplified form. The organist was Miss E. Dunham.
The visiting preacher at the evening service was Pastor C. D. Cooper. chairman of the Norfolk Congregational Federation.
Mrs R. McVaigh was organist.
Eye Men and the Royal British Legion were led by the Mayor of Eye, Mr Hugh Havers with members of the Town, the Police, Guides, Brownies and the Red Cross.
In a service at the Sunday Morning, The Vicar of Eye. the Rev. R. B. Jones officiated. assisted by the Methodist Minister. the Rev. T. Hamer and the Rev. Donald Back. Baptist Minister.
The Legion Tribute was given by Major D. W. A. Clem who also laid the Legion Wreath.
Other wreaths were laid by the President of the Women's Section. Mrs R. Bailey. the Mayor, and members of other organisations taking part.
After the service the parade led by the Diss Salvation Army Band and Marshalled by Mr Aubrey Chambers marched to the Parish Church where a large congregation attended the service.
The Lesson was read by Major Reeve. and a collection was taken for Poppy Day funds.

At the AGM of the Diss Royal British Legion Women Section.
This years AGM which was attended by Lady Mann the President.
Mrs E. Lee the Norfolk County Chairman. spoke about the British Legion.
The Secretary Mrs I. Nunn gave the yearly report.
The President, Officers and Committee were all re-elected.

So how about living up to it?
The Ladies of the Legion have been showing the way for years now, and without them I dare not think what would have happened to Discs Branch Royal British Legion.
The next meeting is open to ex-Service men and women and is to be held at Grassmere on Monday 18 July at 8 pm. please do come and see us this time.
