VE Day 75 Commemorations

All at Royal British Legion Dawlish Branch, Dawlish Town Council, Events Committee and others involved in the planning of the commemorations wish to say our thanks to everybody who followed the guidelines set by the Government while joining in the commemorations on the 8th May.

As people are no longer able to attend national and regional VE Day 75 commemorations or events due to the Covid-19 pandemic, The Royal British Legion is keen to deliver a range of remote activities for people to participate in from home. The Legion is inviting all its members to join together in encouraging people of all generations and communities to take part in the activities on 8th May, as society faces some of the most challenging times since the Second World War, it is now more important than ever to unite in recognition of service to the nation.

Dawlish:

The Royal British Legion Dawlish together with Dawlish Town Council and Dawlish Celebrates are encouraging people to have a “stay at home party” and to share your photos with us.

Across the Country:

On Friday 8th May, the Legion is calling on people to join in a national moment of reflection at 11:00 and pause for a Two Minute Silence, not only in recognition of the Second World War but also to reflect on the impact that Covid-19 has had on so many lives around the world. Everybody is invited to take part in the Silence in whatever way they feel appropriate.

Following the Silence, the Legion will be hosting a VE Day livestream, sharing stories and memories from those who served and sacrificed during the Second World War. The stream will be live from 11:15 on the Legions website.

The BBC in partnership with the Royal British Legion will honour and celebrate the World War Two Generation with an evening of memories and music starting at 20:00.

Following on from this, at 21:00, the Legion is asking for as many people as possible to step outside and unite the nation in a special rendition of “We’ll Meet Again” as we give thanks to our veterans and remember our loved ones.

Also available now is a learning pack, designed for 7-14-year olds, which includes first-hand accounts from the Second World War generation, veteran interviews and a range of activities to allow families to explore and commemorate VE Day 75 together.
