North Cemetery, War Graves

Darlington Borough Council, and The Commonwealth War Graves Commission, have both approved for Darlington Branch of The Royal British Legion to publish photos and information of War Graves and Memorials within the Darlington area

Died in an accident at a quarry at Barmpton, near Darlington, County Durham, with Signalman Joseph Hinnigan and Signalman Sidney Case during a sandbag filling operation. After a first sand-slide had almost buried the three men, a second slide entombed them and two local workmen; the two local workmen were dug out and survived

John was one of four aircrew, whom were crewing Handley Page Hampden Mk 1 (#L4119) (QR-F) on a combat operation on 01/05/1940.

that were lost on combat operations

Their aircraft crashed at Croxton Kerrial, 6.6 miles (10.6 km) south-west of Grantham, Lincolnshire (on the Lincolnshire/Leicestershire borders, at approximate co ordinates 52.856625°N 0.758997°W) on return from an operational flight, 01/05/1940

The Hampden had taken off from RAF Hemswell, Lincolnshire, with the target being Aalborg, Denmark. All four aircrew were killed
