The Hampden had taken off from RAF Hemswell, Lincolnshire, with the target being Aalborg, Denmark. All four aircrew were killed

John father was an ironwork's labourer from Darlington. His parents married around 1887 and had eight children, made up of six girls and two boys. John was their second eldest child. In 1891 the Bloomer family lived at 7 Farrer Street, Hopetown, Darlington. By 1901 they had moved to 27 Sheraton Street, Darlington


John, who had been working as a driller, joined the Royal Navy on 7th May 1908, planning to serve five years full-time plus seven years in the Royal Fleet Reserve (RFR). He was initially rated as an ordinary seaman with the service number SS/2386. He was rated an able seaman on 25 August 1910. At the time of the 1911 census John was living in the Royal Naval Barracks in Devonport, Devon. He was demobilised to shore on 3rd May 1913 when he completed his short service period


John was transferred to the Royal Fleet Reserve (RFR) as an able seaman with the new service number B/5020. He was called back into active service on 2 August 1914 on the outbreak of war and served on HMS Crescent, a protected cruiser.

He married Annie in Darlington during 1915. They had one son named Herbert Raine Bloomer, born in 1916. John died from pneumonia on 19th July 1918 at the Royal Naval Hospital Granton in Edinburgh. He was buried in North Cemetery, Darlington

He was christened at St Paul's Church, Darlington, on 24th November 1895

John's father was a fish dealer in Darlington. In April 1911, he and his older brother, Robert, had joined their father working in the family business. He had another brother, Matthew, who worked as an "iron turner" and a sister, Sarah Ann

When the war began, he had been serving as a Territorial Soldier in the 5th Battalion Durham Light Infantry for over a year and volunteered for overseas service. He sailed with the battalion's Transport Section from Southampton and landed in Le Havre in France on 17th April 1915. A little over a week later, the 5th Battalion took part in the Second Battle of Ypres


Details of his service are unknown, but he died on 3rd March 1919, at Yarm Road Hospital, Darlington. He is commemorated on the Commonwealth War Graves Commission's web site, so, presumably he died from illness or wounds received while serving in the army
