Also, in tribute to a prominent villager and sadly missed RBL Member, our flagpole, which stands by our War Memorial, is dedicated to Fred Hutt; the plaque at the flagpole's base reads:

'In memory of Frederick William Hutt 1916-1999. "His dearest wish from national pride and to honour those who served and died was to fly the flag in which he believed. To his memory stands, that wish achieved." Byfield & District Royal British Legion. November 1999.'

Fred was also an enthusiastic bell ringer and recruited a number of youngsters into the art; six of those carried his coffin at his funeral.
