The Byfield & District Quiz of 2016
The high pressure over the Faroes bringing settled weather secured a better attendance this year, and we made the most of it. We beat 2014's take by over £100 this year of 2016 making a profit of £566.27; in these very interesting times we must appreciate every effort anyone makes to support our cause; so that's a BIG thank you to all those who attended - please keep coming.
This year's quiz was more Brains Trust than Pointless; Russ had decided to mentally stretch us all a little, probably due to there being a big tussle for the top last year. I bet anyone actually taking note of the scores from a statistical point of view could have made something mathematically interesting of the results; suffice to say the top echelon were getting near the maximum points possible, 196 (although not quite achieving that), with the runners-up baying at their heels. Then there was a bit of a gap between "them" and "us" (I was one of the usses). It was interesting to note the two top teams fielded the same players as were capped last year, this time with their situations reversed.
One of the highlights at this year's quiz was a "Dutch Auction" of a VERY LIMITED EDITION PRINT, of a preliminary sketch of the Jaguar F Type; the print was signed by Ian Callum, who led the car's design team. The print has never been distributed and never offered for sale. It is one of very few given by the company to a small select group close to Jaguar Land-Rover.
On the night of the quiz, bids in sealed envelopes were submitted, the winning bidder was selected and the print presented.
The RBL wishes to thank the bidder for their munificent contribution, which will be added to RBL funds but maybe more importantly, our thanks to the individual who donated the print to support the work of the RBL.
There was also a conventional raffle and, as you'll see from the image here, very generous people had donated prizes in profusion - AND bacon butties abounded (although they weren't there to be won). This year the Byfield PTA stepped into the buttie breach and gained our grateful thanks. Thanks also to those who supported AND to the raffle and quiz teams and RBL bar staff who worked hard before, during AND AFTER - all your efforts were very much appreciated.
