2018 A Byfield & District Quiz to Remember

Our quiz this two thousand and eighteenth year (since anyone really started counting) and One Hundred years and One Week since the armistice that ended the First World War (and sowed the seeds for the second) was a record.

Now here's an interesting question. Which of these items is it illegal to carry along a pavement in a Metropolitan Police (London) area? A pot of paint, a ladder or a Swiss army penknife?*

We were "blown away" by the support we received from our villagers and Members, especially as there was a rival "do" in the pub round the corner AND an event in Woodford to contend with. We'd just had a "Big Thank You" gathering to commemorate the end of WW1, which was right royally supported, so we weren't expecting too much but boy were we pleased when Byfield Village Hall filled almost to capacity, with more tables having to be set-up in its extremes to accommodate the throng.

Laurie and Alison were a little worried mid week when the raffle table was looking somewhat thin but by Friday evening it was groaning with goodies.

Russ was in quiz command, with Shaun calling and Karin scoring, Bob, Peter and Vernon on the checking table, the situation was normal, and all under control.

Alan and Jackie ran the bar, managing it to the point of there being one bottle of Hobgoblin not sold at the end of the proceedings. They did run out of lager but still had some wine left but as that was negotiated to be on sale or return, it didn't affect the costs. Rachel of the PTA again provided the bacon baps, which were selling like hot buns AND she decorated the hall with lights and bunting, for which we owe her our grateful thanks.

This year the team "A Question of Port" took the first prize, with runners-up "The Big Angels" and "ABC"; so, where were "The French Connection"? In the past, they had been the team to beat, maybe they were in France.

*Interesting question? I guess you didn't take the bait, it IS a ladder!
