Burnley & Padiham

The Royal British Legion is recognised as the national custodian of Remembrance.

Remembrance Sunday, the second Sunday in November, is the day traditionally put aside to remember all those who have given their lives for the peace and freedom we enjoy today.

Memorial Gardens:

It as been noted that the white crosses that are laid out in the peace garden each remembrance tide are being handled. Members of the public are putting the names of those who have been killed in action on the crosses. PLEASE do not do this. Look at an individual white cross and that cross is what you should focus on. We cannot replace the crosses that have been written on. This will lead to the crosses being totally removed, not by this Branch but by the public. Any cross that is written upon without RBL Burnley authority WILL be removed.

We cannot keep replacing crosses. Sorry.

May I respectfully remind all veteran's & the public that the laying out of the peace garden is a responsibility taken on voluntary by the Branch. We will carry on doing that as long as possible, however, this may not happen in the long term. The Branch has no legal obligation to lay out the crosses each year. It all depends on our kind volunteer's and if they are available. Please do not criticise the Branch if you do not volunteer. Notices will be placed at the peace garden to discourage the public from writing on Crosses. Crosses written on cannot be used again and cannot be repaired due to staffing & costs.

Please try & focus on one of the many crosses and that will be your cross.

Remember the Crosses are not public property and belong to the Branch.

If you have any questions about the above then please contact the Office during opening times.

Thank you,
Billy Allott.
(Branch Chair)

May I take this opportunity to thank the Council and the public for their kind support during this terrible Pandemic. I also thank our Branch Volunteer's and Committee Members for help in making sure this Branch has survived during the Pandemic. Many Lancashire Branches have not. Indeed many U.K. Branches have had to close.

This is a great testament to all our Volunteer's.
