Brief overview of our 60 mile challenge on the beaches of Normandy - Some photos below from our Challenge
We left pegasus bridge on the morning of 2/6 and made our way up to sword beach at quistreham where we walked along the beach and promenade until we got to graye sur mer at juno beach where we camped at canadian scottish and visited the inns of court memorial and placed a cross and poppies .
We then moved off next morning 3/6 and walked the route the commandos took towards port bessin this was where the PLUTO pipeline was bought in to refuel vehicles so it was crucial the commandos took it and they did but it was a tough fight and en route we stopped at arromanches , the terrain was coastal on this part of walk ,we camped overnight at port bessin then headed off again in the morning 4/6.
We walked towards grandcamp maisey this route was coastal and beach then road, we walked along omaha beach and en route visited the american war cemetery where we met veterans from USA and UK and that experience was very humbling, lest we forget.
We continued along the promenade and then along the road the footpath had fallen away en route to pointe du hoc unfortunately .We camped overnight at grandcamp maisey the weather had been great so far with occasional shower .
We left camp on the morning of 5/6 and all this last leg to carentan was along the road a lot of the cliffs have collapsed so no coastal route ,we stopped off at isigny sur mer for refreshments and reached carentan about 3pm where we had a beer in total we walked 60.9 miles .
Once we started to have a beer the wind picked up and the rain started we got back to camp then went to st mere eglise but weather was getting worse so we came back to camp and had a few beers then packed up next morning and visited 'Deadmans corner' museum which was great the whole experience including the sights we see and we met a lot of great people the support we got en route from cars both new and vintage including the convoys of old american trucks and jeeps was amazing and we had a great laugh doing it although it was tough but in true iccy spirit we soldiered on in total we will have raised about £1500 for royal british legion
