NEWSLETTER - NOVEMBER

Hello Everyone,

I hope you are all well, enjoying cosy autumnal evenings wrapped up warm indoors and are looking forward to the festive season.

Many thanks to our members who submitted photographs from recent ceremonies they attended. These will be included in our final newsletter of 2025.

Please come and join us for the RBL Brittany Branch festive gathering on Thursday 4th December at 12:00 at the Carpaccio Ristorante on Rue du Caire, Pontivy.

Our quizmaster is preparing a suitably themed seasonal quiz and hopefully you may win a Christmas present from the raffle. Donations for raffle prizes are, as always, most welcome. You may wish to wear your favourite Christmas jumper though it is not compulsory.

This is an ideal opportunity to have your monthly catch up with friends. You do not have to be a member of the RBL to attend, though it would be lovely to increase the number of Branch members, so I have added information on joining the Branch below. I would recommend telephoning as I have found this easiest and the team are most helpful, however if you have any problems please do not hesitate to ask me for help. Many thanks to our recently joined new members and also members who recently renewed their Branch membership, your continued support is much appreciated.

Due to the increasing popularity of the monthly socials, priority will be given to members so if you would like to attend could you please let me know by e-mailing [email protected] with the number attending, by Monday 1st December. Please book your place as soon as you can. Although ‘walk in attendees’ on the day are always most welcome, unfortunately I cannot guarantee you a seat if you just turn up. Additionally if you wish to sit with a specific group of friends, please do arrive a little earlier to avoid disappointment.

Looking forward to seeing you all soon.

Kind Regards

NEWSLETTER - OCTOBER

Hello Everyone,

I hope you are all well and the recent rain has not dampened your spirits. We have made the most of the few dry days to put the garden to bed for winter. For those who have been lucky enough to get away to visit sunnier climes or spend precious time with family and friends, welcome home.

The branch AGM will be held on Thursday 6th November at the Carpaccio Ristorante on Rue du Caire, Pontivy prior to the monthly social. All branch members are encouraged to attend the AGM. Thank you to those who have sent in their apologies for non-attendance at the AGM. The AGM will be followed by the monthly social with the usual challenging quiz, raffle and Poppy Appeal items. Donations for raffle prizes are most welcome. You do not have to be a member of the RBL to attend the social, although we would appreciate it if you considered joining the branch.

As the venue has asked for the number of attendees, if you think you will be attending could you please let me know by e-mailing [email protected] with the number attending, by Sunday 2nd November.

Many thanks to everyone who has recently renewed their Branch membership and our new members, your continued support is much appreciated.

If you would like any further information on the Finistère events, please let me know and as soon as we receive the detailed schedule, I will send it on to you. If you would like a wreath please let me know and I will bring these along on the day or make alternative arrangements for you to receive them if you are unable to attend.

Some of our Branch members attended commemoration events including a number marking the 80th anniversary of VE day.

The President, David Bashford, Welfare Officer Pamela Bashford and Sue Farrell-Cook represented the branch at a ceremony to commemorate the survivors of flight 896 at the Chapelle de Coat-Maël in Maël-Pestivien on Sunday 27th.

In the early hours of April 21, 1944, six young men parachuted from their Wellington bomber in distress. It was their first operational mission, dropping leaflets over Tours. The crew was made up of five Canadians and one Englishman. For the Canadians, it was the start of an 80-day flight across Brittany. Sergeant Kempson, who died four days later of a serious head injury on landing, remained in France, buried in the Bayeux military cemetery.

At the same time as the ceremony in at the Chapelle de Coat-Maël in Maël-Pestivien Steve Oliver-Crockett visited the grave of Sgt Kempson at the Bayeux cemetery.

Also our Finistère members, John Duncan, Jean-Michel Crewe, Ali and Daniel Joncqueur, Teresa Apperre, and Ceri Roberts represented the branch at numerous ceremonies; La Foret Landerneau, Le Folgoët, Lesneven, Plouneour, Brignogan, Athabaskan, Treflez, Gouesnou and Lanidut.

Looking forward to seeing you all soon.

NEWSLETTER - APRIL

Hello Everyone

I hope you are all well and enjoyed the Easter weekend.  Hopefully the Easter bunny paid you a visit and you still have some chocolate left.

Many thanks to all who attended the April lunch which was very well supported and enjoyed by all.  It is most encouraging that the numbers attending the lunch are continuing to increase and the Branch are most grateful to you for your continued support.

Special thanks to Steve Oliver-Crockett, who is also a member of the Normandy Branch, for making the long journey to join us for the lunch.  We look forward to a closer working relationship with the Normandy Branch.

Due to commemoration events marking the 80th anniversary of VE day on Thursday the 8th May, unfortunately there will not be an RBL lunch in May, as advised by the Chairman at the last lunch.

The next lunch will be held on Thursday 5th June at 12:00hrs at the Carpaccio Ristorante on Rue du Caire, Pontivy.  I will send the usual email invitation closer to the time.

On behalf of the branch, the Chairman together with John Duncan OBE, Jean-Michel Crewe (Standard Bearer) and a number of branch members resident in Finistère, attended the funeral of Col Claude Jeffroi, in Plounéour-Trez on Tuesday 8th April. Claude was one of our first French members of the branch and he was also President of the local UNC branch in Finistère. He served with the French forces worldwide including in Lebanon with the UN and in the Balkans attached to the OSCE.

The President, David Bashford will be representing the branch at a ceremony at the Chapelle de Coat-Maël in Maël-Pestivien on Sunday 27th April organised by Terry Bramwell.   The ceremony is to commemorate the heroic efforts of six young men who parachuted from their Wellington bomber in distress. It was their first operational mission, dropping leaflets over Tours. The crew was made up of five Canadians and one Englishman. For the Canadians, it was the start of an 80-day flight across Brittany. Sergeant Kempson, the only Englishman, sadly died four days later of a serious head injury on landing, remained in France, buried in the Bayeux military cemetery.

If any members are attending any ceremonies in May, I would be grateful if you would please send me some photos which we can include in the next update.

Looking forward to seeing you all in June.

Kind Regards

Karen Lockwood

NEWSLETTER - JANUARY

Hello Everyone,

We hope you all had a wonderful Christmas and New Year and are looking forward to 2025.
Here, life continues with the odd cold frost in the morning together with the rather windy and damp Brittany weather. Thankfully the days are getting longer and the nights shorter as we sit in front of nice warm log fires in the evening deciding what to do tomorrow, or as is more often the case what not do tomorrow!

As February quickly approaches, New Year’s intentions have long been forgotten and the ‘New Year Diet’ has been banished to the cupboard for another year, it is time to think about getting out and enjoying ourselves. So what better way than to join us at our first British Legion Social of 2025.

It will, as usual, be held on the first Thursday of the month, Thursday 6th February at 12:00hrs at the Carpaccio Ristorante on Rue du Caire, Pontivy. There will be the usual topical Quiz and a Raffle. Donations for raffle prizes are as always most welcome. So if you have any new or unwanted Christmas presents you don’t really want to keep, please do bring them along.

This is an ideal opportunity to meet new friends or see friends you have not seen for a while and have a good catch up. You do not have to be a member of the RBL to attend, though it would be lovely to increase the number of Branch members, so we have added information on joining the Branch below. We would recommend telephoning as we have found this easiest and the team are most helpful. Please do come along and bring your friends.

The venue has asked for the number of attendees, so if you think you will be attending could you please let me know by replying to this e-mail with the number attending, by Sunday 2nd February. Due to the recent high number of attendees and increasing popularity of the monthly socials, which is very good news and we are most grateful for your support, to ensure you have a seat at lunch please do let us know if you will be attending.

We are aware that a number of members are fortunate enough to have escaped the Brittany winter weather for sunnier climates and wish you all happy holidays with pleasant journeys home.

Looking forward to seeing you all soon.

Kind Regards
