New memorial plaque at La Forest-Landerneau

On Saturday the 21st September the Chairman and other branch members attended a ceremony organised by John Duncan in La Forest-Landerneau. The ceremony was for the inauguration of a new memorial plaque to three British Commando’s, Marine Sanderson (20), Able Seamen Brady (21) and Muldoon (20) from 30 Assault Unit led by Ian Fleming of James Bond fame, who lost their lives on 1 September 1944 at a rail crossing during a mission in front of Allied lines.

The event was a joint Souvenir Français and Royal British Legion (Central Brittany) function with attendance by prominent dignitaries, French associations, embassy officials, family members, a delegation of Royal Marines and Royal Navy (from the UK) as well as family members of the French Resistance. An honour guard was provided by members of the French Commandos. The plaque was unveiled and wreaths laid followed by a reading, by John Duncan, of a letter of thanks from King Charles III to the Branch and the Souvenir Français.  After the ceremony the Marie hosted a reception and Vin d’honneur for all attendees at the village hall.

Special thanks to John Duncan for his hard work organising the event and Standard Bearers Jean-Michel Crewe and Teresa Appéré.
