On Thursday 24th October 2013, at the City of Armagh Royal British Legion Club Annual General Meeting, Comrade Rodney Hunter publicly announced his ‘retirement’ as President of the Branch.  On Friday 29th November2013 Armagh City and District Council graciously hosted a reception at the Palace Stables (the Palace was undergoing major renovation work, and not available as a venue) to mark Rodney’s life-time of service to the community of Armagh City and District, and beyond.

The Lord Mayor opened the proceedings by addressing those present, and recounting in a light-hearted manner, the different roles in which Rodney has served the community throughout his lifetime.  He then presented Rodney with a framed painting of the Council Palace.  Rodney replied to this address, and thanked everyone for making this such a special night for him.  Then it was the new RBL President, Cde. David Hammerton’s turn to make his address.  Again this was a light-hearted but sincere overview of Rodney’s lifetime of community service through many outlets.  Following this, Rodney was presented by a specially commissioned ‘Past President’s brooch, a ‘Certificate of Appreciation’ presented by Branch Chairman, Cde. Paul Corr, and a pen gift set presented by Club Chairman, Cde. John Brookes.   Rodney’s wife, Joan was then presented with a bouquet of flowers by Branch Treasurer, Cde. Jackie Hammerton.

A buffet meal was served, and all present took full advantage of the Lord Mayor’s hospitality drinks throughout the evening.  Everyone who had been invited thoroughly enjoyed the evening, enjoying the social interaction and the relaxing, informal atmosphere.  It was a fitting and proper event to celebrate Rodney’s lifetime of community commitment, and to wish him a long, happy and healthy retirement.
