Dedication of New Standard Parade and Service

Sunday 19th of April 2015

We had a good turnout for a Dedication Service and parade of our new Standard.  Cadets from 2328 Squadron Air Training Corps paraded and cadets from that squadron and the Bishop's  Cleeve Army Cadet Platoon acted as escorts for our old and new Standards. We were fortunate to have the County President, Air Vice-Marshal Ian Corbitt, with the County Standard, the Women's Section County Standard and 8 Standards from other Gloucestershire RBL Branches, plus the Tewkesbury Royal Naval Association Standard in attendance.

The Service in the Parish Church was conducted by the Rev. Malc Allen, C of E, assisted by the Rev. Father Peter Slocombe, R.C and Rev Doctor James Tubbett Ph.D, the local Methodist Minister. The Bugler was Mr Graham Sharpe and the organist was Mr. Jerry Spence.

We were fortunate in having Miss Carole Hoban, County Parade Marshal, in charge of the parade.

Branch History (With Thanks to Ken Blake)

Woodmancote, Southam & Cleeve Hill British Legion Branch was founded in 1950. In 1951, Bishop's Cleeve branch folded and members joined the Woodmancote, Southam & Cleeve Hill Branch,

In 1969, the Branch was able to buy the Old Railway site in Pecked Lane, Bishop's Cleeve. The existing building was built in March 1970 and officially opened in May of that year.

In 1971 the Branch received the Royal Title and from then on became  the Royal British Legion.  In 1973, the lounge was built.

In 1974 RBL Headquarters at Pall mall, gave permission to attach Bishop's Cleeve to the area branch.   We then became ;-

Woodmancote, Southam, Cleeve Hill and Bishop's Cleeve Branch of ther Royal British Legion.

In the legal agreement transactions of 1970 (Club & Branch) it stated that the Royal British Legion owns all of the building and Ground occupied by the Club and Branch.

In 1980, the War Memorial was moved from the junction of Evesham& Cheltenham Road to its present site, in Church Road.
